Hey, I got my ocarina. I promised to do a review for potential Zelda ocarina players. Bad news: Epona doesn't show up when you play her song, and I'll be damned if I can get time to slow down when I play the "Inverted Song of Time". The good news: for 40 bucks, you can get a good plastic ocarina--which is a bit sharp on the high notes but won't break--and two songbooks with a special discount on stlocarina.com. Yay. It's a 12 hole Zelda tenor ocarina (a sweet potato ocarina) and it comes with a neck strap and an instruction book. Plus, the STL site is chock full of ocarina playing goodness, including charts to translate sheet music into tablature for the ocarina. If you are more serious (or just not worried about breaking your first ocarina), check out their Zelda packages. For about $60, you can get a clay ocarina, the neck straps (on some models), instruction books, a Zelda songbook, and an additional songbook. Cool, huh? I can't play my ocarina right now, b/c I have a cold, but I will post some samples of this ocarina when I get better. Beware: my sound equipment sucks so the samples won't be nearly as good as a live performance. If you like what you hear, though, check out youtube. docjazz4, in particular, has some good videos about picking a good ocarina and has some awesome reviews.
