A Friend in Need

I had been walking for a long time. The city was slowly began a shadowy blur behind me. I could no longer hear the sounds of people, or cars. It was almost like an eerie silence was falling over me. I kept walking until I came across an old woman trying to pick apples out of a tree.

"Excuse me ma'am, you look like you could use some help."

She turned and looked at me. She seemed oddly familiar, like a long lost friend. But her eyes stood out most of all. They were aqua, but at times they would seem blue, and then green.

"I could use a hand, but I can't pay you because I have no money."

"It's okay. I'm trying to figure some stuff out, but something tells me I should help you."

I went over and began climbing the tree. It didn't seem that tall of a tree, but the more I climbed the taller it seemed to get. I finally made it to the very top, and on the very top branch sat two apples. A gold one and a silver one.

"Which one of these apples do you want ma'am?"

"That is not for me to tell but for you to decide."

What a strange way of answering. I pondered a minute or two. Gold would seem to be the favorable choice. It would have great value, and even could make the women rich. I picked the silver apple though and climbed down the tree.

"What choice did you make?"

I held out the silver apple and she took it.

"Why would you choose the silver one? Do you want the gold one for yourself?"

"Well ma'am, I did think about how rich that gold apple could make a person. Anyone could live an expensive lifestyle, but would they be happy? I don't think so, because money doesn't bring happiness but delays the realization of being alone. The silver apple though may not be worth as much, but a person would be able to live a decent life."

She smiled.

"I've been waiting at this spot for fifty years now, waiting for a honest and good person to come by here and help me. Now I will grant you one wish, and it can be anything but more wishes."

I thought for a minute.

"The whole reason I was walking, was to figure out who I am, so my wish is to know who I am."

Her smile slowly started to fade.

"Your wish is a hard one to grant, but I will tell you who you are."

She walked up closer, stared strongly into my eyes.

"I wished we could have had a little bit longer time Blue Eyes, but this is where we part ways."

Before I could even say a word she poked me in the fore head, and the whole world began to dissolve.
