Books and Writing

So I've been reading this book--The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender. She writes magical realism. For you non-writer types, it's a style of writing that incorporates realism with surrealism. Something is just a bit off. I actually met Aimee Bender a few years ago and had a writer's workshop with her. She's pretty awesome. But anyway, I'm loving this book. It's about a girl who can taste the emotions of the people who prepare the food that she eats. I have a friend who's reading it too and she told me it gets really weird towards the end. I can never anticipate Bender's twists so I'm curious. Hoping it doesn't totally destroy my love for this story....

I love magical realism though. If I could write in magical realism all the time, I'd do it. It's so much fun to write.

Speaking of writing. I finished a manuscript the other day. How long have I been working on this one...? I think I first started it four years ago. I talked about it a couple of times here--"For the Love of Cosplay" it's called. Haha. It's been a long time since I've started something new. I kind of miss it, actually. Maybe I should work on publishing a little.

Anyway, if you like weird but beautiful books, I'd recommend The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. Also Willful Creatures. There's a short story in there about a double murder and salt and pepper shakers; it's my favorite Bender short story.
