Yeah, I don't have a more flattering picture, nearly half the series is indulging in tail fluffing.
Kuroto is a very unhappy salaryman, working long shifts, becoming more unhealthy by his terrible work home balance and is genuinely depressed.
Senko, a fox spirit comes along and decides to pamper Kuroto until he stops being depressed and the darkness disappears, it's unclear why but a deeper connection appears to be at play here although Kuroto gets more joy out of fluffing Senko's tail.
Male fantasy has been thrown around alot with this series but really it's existence is more to do with two other things, Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, or ASMR and an attempt to repair Japan's broken work culture, I don't get any pleasure out of watching this even though as a working office employee, this is aimed at me, all it's doing is reminding me of things that are pretty common sense self care advice but the immersion of that instantly breaks when Kuroto just wants to fluff tail all the time, so it's ultimate goal kinda falls flat, I also think this series inspired a lot of vtubers as the ending segments are right out of the vtuber playbook.
Never watched the dub but it should be fine.
Final Verdict: The idea was there and I'm all for it, just the execution is alot to be desired
Time for laugh out loud comedy.
Kazuma is a major shut in who in trying to save someone from being hit by a tractor, not only didn't need saving but dies from a heart attack, chewed out by the goddess Aqua and told he can be brought back to save the fantasy world, Kazuma out of pure malice for the goddess, decides to bring her with him only for her to prove to be mostly useless, joined by a mage who only explodes things and a crusader who is durable but masochistic, Kazuma stumbles his way into becoming the hero everyone needs even if the path to it isn't entirely heroic.
Comedies tend to come and go and Konosuba proves that it can stay the test of time, three seasons in and it's as funny as season 1 and beyond and having Megumin, Darkness and Aqua as companions just makes the perfect party, it reminds me of early Slayers; to borrow an up to date internet term, Kazuma is very based in his attitude and speeches, you only have to pick out his gender equality quotes alone to see what type of person he is, a later scene has him beat the hero by stealing his sword, bopping his head and then pawning it for money, the whole anime runs on this energy and is a pleasure to watch, the acting is much better subbed than dubbed as Aqua's constant whining is more bearable in Japanese.
Final Verdict: A fun comedy with the longevity to be timeless, Konosuba is one of the best comedies in anime history.
I wonder how many anime I'll finish by year end.
Rein Shroud, a renowned beast tamer has just been kicked out of the heroes party, on trying to rebuild his adventuring career, he saves a ultimate cat beast named Kanade who agrees to form a contract with Rein, what follows is other ultimate species including twin fairies, a dragon kin in Tania and a Kitsune joining as his partners, showing up the hero's party who rejected him and defeating corrupt lords.
Rein is probably the only harem protagonist in history to earn his harem by being a really nice guy, I don't think there's a single moment in the show that ends with a slap in the face or even the use of the word pervert, to back it up, he's not socially bankrupt and is actually ridiculously reliable and overpowered, if this is the new norm for this genre, sign me up, but it does feel all too easy, I don't think Rein is winning any awards for complexity as he pretty much wins any battle barely breaking a sweat even shrugging off a direct strike from the Grim Reaper, so he joins a list of fantasy protagonists that are too OP to have a normal story, sometimes it works like Bofuri but other times it can be frustrating, Beast Tamer is at least in the middle as it's cast more than makes up for it's shortcomings.
Dub is passable at least.
Final Verdict: Beast Tamer is the first harem anime to have a genuinely likeable protagonist, Tenchi Muyo and Sakura Wars are the only other ones that spring to mind but don't expect a deep story to accompany it.
Wait, I haven't reviewed this before?
During a drunken night out in the mountains, Miss Kobayashi pulls a holy sword out of an injured dragon, grateful to her saviour, Tohru decides to become Kobayashi's personal maid, followed by other dragons, the life of Kobayashi is about to get more interesting.
Kobayashi feels so unique compared to other stories of this type and was really the trend setter for including more office workers as leads, what really makes the series work, is how much heart comes from the show as a whole and both seasons really thrive on that, even Ilulu proves to be a source of wholesomeness, you'd think you would be expecting this anime to function in a certain way with its copious amounts of sexy dragons but it never goes there, it helps that Kobayashi isn't a typical anime protagonist, she's far too intelligent to fall for any of the trappings this type of anime could pull but not so above it all that she can't join the madness, KyoAni smashed it out the park with this one, I wish the dub kept it's politics to itself and follow the original script, yeah the dub is a disgrace, don't watch it.
Final Verdict: Dragon Maid is a phenomenal anime that needs to be watched by everyone, it's heart will keep you watching for hours.
To keep up with everything I've ever reviewed since the beginning I've produced a quick guide saying which Anime and Cartoons I've reviewed, a one line synopsis and now one line of good and bad.
