Hi I'm Dranzerstorm
You may remember me as a regular contestant on the caption battle contest.
Welcome to Retro Retrospective, my world dedicated to the old guard of the Otaku world; expect some reviews of the old & obscure, and in-depth geeky knowledge with the occasional top ten and I now have a logo.

Little info about me
Well I'm British and I'm in to all things animated and nostalgia.
I've grown up with every cartoon going and have watched hundreds of anime.
Oh and to answer a question I was asked once, no I don't wear glasses in real life, I would wear Loke's sunglasses though.

Top 10 Revolving Wardrobe Characters

Partly inspired by one of the entries, these are the characters who can wear absolutely anything, these characters never stick to one outfit for very long, they always change clothing frequently and have plenty to choose from, so without further delay lets begin.

Honorable Mentions
Elizabeth Midford from Black Butler
Always appears in a different dress each time she appears, if it weren't for restrictions in the time period she'd wear every type of dress going.
Isaac & Miria from Baccano
They wear a different costume on every heist but the series is too short compared to the other entries who come from longer series.
Any Idol or Precure Anime
Because naming them all would not make this list very interesting.

10. Toru Kouno, Yuujirou Shihodani and Mikoto Yutaka from Princess Princess
Our first entries are the only male entries on this list, saying that these pretty boys can pull off absolutely anything whether it be male or female clothing, a testament to the art design this anime has.

9. Naru Narusegawa from Love Hina
As the artist's favorite, Naru gets the pick of pretty much every costume going including anime only, manga covers and promotional art exclusives. It helps that Ken Akamatsu is a cosplay otaku and that his wife is the inspiration for Naru.

8. Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon
While all the Sailor Scouts go through a decent wardrobe of clothes, Usagi gets bonuses for using disguises and battle costume upgrades, heck she even pulls off a very convincing male in the manga.

7. Lum from Urusei Yatsura
The only entry on this list to have more costumes in promotional art than her actual anime, it's something which Rumiko Takahashi did alot of which would transfer into Ranma 1/2, in fact for a long time Lum was the face of anime itself.

6. Honey Kisaragi from Cutey Honey
Honey is a master of disguise and will show case any costume when the situation calls for it, in fact her trademark catchphrase often involves her showcasing her disguises before becoming Cutey Honey.

5. Yuri from Dirty Pair Franchise
Yuri is an interesting case because a good majority of her wardrobe appears in one episode of the Flash series if only to spoof how many outfits she's had over all series in the franchise even those outside of Japan with the Adam Warren comics.

4. Rebecca Miyamoto from Pani Poni Dash
Appears in a different outfit every episode and some of her DVD cover costumes are spoofs of other anime characters like Gendou Ikari or cultural icons like Bruce Lee and the Terminator.

3. Sakura Kinomoto from Card Captor Sakura
This is the only entry to actually have her own personal fashion designer in Tomoyo, not by choice and Tomoyo is a little too eager to dress up Sakura for all her battles. Saying that, this is the most diverse set of Magical Girl costumes ever assembled in one show.

2. Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail
She has an armor for every occasion and battle, she even uses her magic to change into regular clothes, she even has special outfits she only gets out when the situation calls for it such as her legendary bikini and her wedding dress. I hate this word but Erza is a real fashionista.

1. Fujiko Mine from Lupin III
This women has appeared in disguises so often that one wonders what she really looks like normally, this even became the subject of her own TV Series spinoff. While previous entries have multiple clothing and one trademark outfit, Fujiko Mine just wears everything and anything, even her trademark catsuits are diverse.

Fairy Tail the Movie: Phoenix Priestess Review

Having watched this movie recently, I think a review is in order.

Fairy Tail is one of my favorite anime series about the exploits of the Wizards Guild bearing the same name but traditionally anime movies don't quite live up to the same standard as the tv series, so here's how this movie went.
Before the movie even starts, it's worth looking over the first morning short beforehand where the title character Phoenix Priestess Eclair accidentally brings to life a stuffed toy made like a bird called Momon whom she doesn't like, it shows a normal day where Eclair works as a fortune teller but after an altercation where she loses the Phoenix Stone she has to shelter away from attacking wolves, the next morning Momon is beat up and the stone has returned safe and sound and they become friends, so now we can begin the film proper.
The movie starts off in great fashion as we see Eclair run away from an assault of people who want her dead, after this rather silent scene we see Team Natsu fail to capture a bandit but since Eclair is the main focus she inevitably ends up meeting up with Lucy who takes her back to the Fairy Tail Guild.
Eclair who is traveling to a dangerous region of the world is guarded by the Fairy Tail Guild despite her hatred of magic but with this being the Fairy Tail guild, Team Natsu has no problem helping.
So after a day of shopping including Gray's streaking, Natsu pigging out on food and Erza buying a wedding dress (don't ask her why) the plot finally gets going when a mercenary attacks Lucy & Eclair leading to a hilarious scene where Lucy ends up butt naked. A quick trip to see Eclair's father later and we return to the guild hall only for it to be demolished by the Carbuncle mercenaries who are working for a stuck up King. They succeed in capturing the Phoenix Stone as well as Eclair and promptly fit it together to summon a great evil monster which destroys everything insight which Natsu and co defeat as well as the Carbuncle Mercenaries and so ends the film. (Non Spoiler Version)
For a film it runs quite well, characters don't feel weakened to accommodate an obvious filler story and many of the best moments come from the comedy and the drama. The fight scenes have poor pacing as we don't stay long enough in some battles to really grasp what's going on, particularly the fight between Natsu and Dist seemed very lacking compared to Gray and Erza's fights and this was meant to be the main villain vs the main character.
Dubbing is top notch as always and I'm happy to see Jessica Calvello return to voice acting especially after almost destroying her vocal cords doing Excel Excel. Her voice work as Eclair was one of her best performances to date.
So that's the Fairy Tail movie, maybe I'll review the main series at some point.
Final Verdict: It's definitely worth a watch if you enjoy a decent story but if you've come for action, there's not really enough to satisfy.

Top 10 Best Dub Voice Acting

And now the other side of the double feature the ten best voice acting in dubs.

Honorable Mentions
Fruits Basket: I’ve never heard a bad thing said about the Fruits Basket dub, but I don’t think it’s enough for a top ten entry.
Full Metal Panic: Just as good as Fruits Basket and sounds like the actors were enjoying themselves during recording.
Sengoku Basara: Only for Jonny Yong Bosch’s performance as Sanada Yukimura, it’s probably the most fun he’s had voice acting anyone.

10. King of Bandits Jing
It's on my list of most underrated Anime of all time and is backed up by a really good dub, and this is ADVs older voice actors from when they started. It goes to show that if you choose the right actors in the first place you won't get a bad dub.

9. Gundam Seed
Pure emotion is a good trait to have in voice acting and veterans Matt Hill & Sam Vincent really do a good job in the emotion heavy Gundam Seed series; the defining moment was watching them tear each other apart midway through season 1. The fact that they are best friends in real life made it more believable.

8. Ranma 1/2
For an anime that was dubbed in the 90s it really stood the test of time, if the license comes back under a different group it shouldn't need re-dubbing.

7. Shinesman
The Shinesman voice cast has very limited credits under them but the scripting was a work of genius and what we got was one of the funniest OVAs since Dragon Half. The offbeat comments like "I'm gonna die in a Godzilla suit" still make me laugh.

6. Medabots
The most fun you can have with a dub ever, the way it was dubbed it felt like it was still authentically Japanese, that's rare for an English dub.

5. Tiger & Bunny
Dubs seem to do better if the anime setting is non Japanese and slightly American, that's what makes Tiger & Bunny such a successful dub. The American hero stereotypes are better done in the English Language and feel more authentic than in Japanese.

4. Tenchi Muyo
Another classically dubbed anime this time with Tenchi Muyo. What makes this dub so special is that a good majority of their choices were veterans of American cartoon voice acting; Ellen Gerstell, Matt K.Miller, Debi Derryberry and Jennifer Darling have years of experience between them and they have even done live action film. There are very few anime who have the same treatment that's not a Studio Ghibli.

3. Nerima Daikon Brothers
I remember reading that many of the voice actors in Funimation, were theater actors, and if there is one series that really showcases that talent it's Nerima Daikon Brothers; it's not easy to sing in a dub but they really pull it off and we even see a new range from voice actors that we never expected them to have.

2. Fairy Tail
The most professional voice acting I've ever witnessed, Funimation really looked after this one, I mentioned raw emotion earlier and it's taken to new heights in Fairy Tail. Rage, tears, comedy, everything is on show, the best dub Funimation have ever done.

1. Pokemon
No seriously, I'm not suffering from head trauma, I'm not being paid by 4Kids or Pokemon Group to say this, neither am I drunk; the Pokemon dub is the best dub I've ever seen. When I watch the Japanese version I don't recognize it at all, I'm part of the crowd where I believe Ash Ketchum will always be Ash Ketchum and not Satoshi. It didn't even bother me when they switched actors later in the Ruby & Sapphire series and who can forget the iconic original theme of Pokemon. How many people still sing that song at conventions.
For everything that 4Kids put us through, remember the only thing they did right.

Top 10 Characters I Can Easily Look Like

Lets face facts I'm not brilliant with cosplay and time is not something I have these days between a full time job and the lack of spare time I get doing life stuff and social stuff but if I did have time, I'd make it easy on myself and go with ten characters I easily look like, this is mainly because I have such easy to work with Blonde Hair.

10. Flynn Scifo from Tales of Vesperia
Okay the costume isn't simple but the looks are really easy, I'm really starting to get into Tales of Vesperia right now so I'm hoping Flynn is more than just an overly chivalrous knight.

9. Bandit Keith from Yu-Gi-Oh
It's easy for me to look rough on the face seeing as I have to shave every two days and I own enough bandanas and shades to pull it off, plus I'm a dead hand at imitating Yu-Gi-Oh abridged voices... IN AMERICA!

8. Minato Namikaze from Naruto
I respect the character highly and store bought Naruto costumes are really easy to come by but my main reason for choosing Minato is the fact that I love red haired women and Kushina is hands down my favorite female Naruto character.

7. England from Hetalia
There are plenty of blondes in Hetalia but I can't call myself British without actually cosplaying Britain himself, although the eyebrows would be hard for me to pull off.

6. Quatre Raberba Winner from Gundam Wing
A snappy dresser and he has goggles of which I own three pairs, one of which goes with the costume. British cosplay puts more emphasis on costume creation so the snappier the outfit the more points you get, that's why most conventions I go to features a lot of female cosplayers in over sized poofy dresses.

5. Sanji from One Piece
I have actually cosplayed Sanji twice already, once in full suit the other in orange shirt and waistcoat, I don't smoke but I enjoy making fun of 4Kids by using lollies instead.

4. Barnaby Brooks Jr from Tiger & Bunny
Out of all the characters on this list, I resemble Barnaby Brooks Jr the most, I'm roughly the right age, almost the right build, I can already cosplay the guy I just need the jacket and finally my hair naturally flicks up when it's long. But my next three entries are the ones I want to cosplay.

3. Loke from Fairy Tail
He's not my avatar for nothing and I enjoy wearing snazzy suits.

2. Yatterman from Yatterman
This is my next cosplay project, Yatterman. He's an old Tatsunoko character from the 70s but has been remade enough to still be remembered, plus I didn't buy a Kendama for nothing, as it's his main weapon.

1. Hermit from Kenichi Mightiest Disciple
But this guy may replace Loke as my avatar. Hermit is quickly becoming my favorite character so don't be surprised if it does actually happen. Plus he's the only character on this list where I don't even have to bother with a hair style, messy works and I know enough about Kenpo to imitate the movements.

Bonus: Just for fun I'll list one Crossplay
0. Alice Malvin from Pumpkin Scissors
Don't expect me to wear a dress, but I'll happily put on her military clothes.

Top 10 Dream Crossovers

Crossover fever has become a staple of geek culture with high flying video game projects such as Project X Zone and semi-regular Shonen Jump crossovers such as Goku & Luffy saving the world, or even the multi-generation crossover film epics of Pretty Cure.
But what crossovers do we as an audience want to see the most? I bring this up seeing as Japan's favorite Thief Lupin III & favorite kid Detective Conan have joined forces in their own film and it looks awesome. Here are ten more series we'd like to see. Only rule is that I cannot list things that already exist such as Dynasty Warrior Gundam's epic crossover.

10. Nadesico X Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Two ships full of idiots fighting in one big battle, although contrary to their ditzy nature I wouldn't want to fight either captain, they're not as stupid as they act.

9. Outlaw Star X Cowboy Bebop
One is considered the best anime of all time, the other is a cult classic stuck in it's shadow but both combined could create something special.

8. Tenjo Tenge X Ikki Tousen
Considering the sex & violence levels in both shows, combined, these two may not even be allowed broadcasting rights but it would still be awesome.

7. Trigun X Grenadier
Consider these two the same shows with different gendered leads. It's too obvious to ignore the awesomeness of Vash the Stampede & Rushuna Tendo.

6. Mage Battle Royal: Fairy Tail X Slayers X Negima
The three powerhouses of the fantasy mage genre in one of the greatest teams in history. I would love to see a piece of art with Negi, Natsu & Lina Inverse in the same picture in all their bad ass glory.

5. One Piece X Fairy Tail
Saying that, Fairy Tail works with One Piece just as well. It would be easy just to combine the powerhouse Shonen Jump shows but you hit roadblocks when you try and decide which universe rules to go by, hence I doubt Bleach or Naruto would work in any other universe other than it's own. Madoka Magica has a similar problem.

4. Evangelion X Gurren Lagann
Evangelion is no stranger to being out of character so adapting for Gurren Lagann is surprisingly simple, two of the most groundbreaking mecha series in anime history, made by the same company no less. I'm surprised they haven't done it yet.

3. Pani Poni Dash X Azumanga Daioh
But not all crossovers have to be about fighting, the classes of Rebecca Miyamoto & Miss Yukari mix well for one of the most surreal looking school comedies of all time.

2. Black Butler X Hellsing
They're both British, they both work in the Underworld, they both have very capable allies and both have plenty of awesome. Between Alucard & Sebastian, pick a winner.

1. Ranma 1/2 X Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple
Many of the previous crossovers on this list would be well received and already written about frequently in fan fiction, but when it comes down to it you still need rules for both shows to fit and not make one show look bigger than the other, that's where this final entry comes in.
Although Ranma 1/2 is driven by it's Gender Bender antics the core part of it is Anything Goes Martial Arts & while Kenichi follows a strict formula of "bad guys get stronger every episode" it also has an anything goes formula, not to mention both shows feature in generic Japan on Earth.
So what does it result in? An anything goes crossover, in other words both worlds are open for any show that takes place on modern day planet Earth to enter, even if said show isn't an action series, in shorter terms this is the basic template world for anime, in fact any animated show, comic, live action movie or video games all use a basic world template and is the easiest scenario to crossover.

Bonus: Missing in Action
Clamp Crossover: All Clamp works happen in the same universe.
Anything with Dragonballz: Cheapens the other shows that get involved.
Magical Girl Crossover: Their universe rules are more diverse than Shonen Jumps.
Generation Crossovers: Nice idea but how do you rework an 80s creation with it's modern remake? Example: Old & New Dirty Pair or all the versions of Macross.
Death Note vs Code Geass: This is more Light vs Lelouch, that's for a different list.
