Chapter 7: Why Not

I walked out of the dorms and wondered over to Doc’s office. In the background I heard singing and a guitar playing. It sounded nice I wish I could have stood there and listened to it more but I had to go and talk to Doc.

The halls were empty and my steps echoed down the halls. I don’t know why I couldn’t figure it out. I was able to figure out how long Hiro and Katara were going to have to effects on them because I had to help Doc with taking down some of his calculations sometimes when he was working on his experiments. Katara…I think I did something wrong to make her made at me. I don’t know what but now I feel bad and I don’t know how to tell her I’m sorry. I’ve never really had friends before.

I knocked on his office door and then walked in he was looking over his bookshelf as if he was looking for something. He turned to look who came in and smiled when he saw me. “Good morning Hei.” He smiled at me. “What’s with the long face?” He asked.

“I think I made Katara mad at me.” I muttered rubbing my arm. “And I may have said too much to her last night…I was just trying to get her to calm down.”

“It can’t be helped Hei, it happens. You were going to have to tell your friends eventually.” Doc answered going back to looking at his books.

“I was able to figure out when they are able to turn back to themselves because of you putting the potion in the punch, clever of you to do that by the way.” I stated as I went over to his couch and sat down.

“Thank you I thought so too. Also very good I’m surprised that you were able to figure it out.” Doc commented. I couldn’t see his face but I knew that he was smiling.

“I hate this.” I mumbled to myself.

“You couldn’t figure out the time you would turn back to normal could you?” He asked me and I said nothing back to him. He could read me like a book.

“No I couldn’t…” I answered gripping my sleeve.

“You probably just left a few numbers out of the equation is all.” Doc commented.

“So when I am supposed to turn back to normal?” I asked him.

“I believe in a day or two at the earliest.” He answered.

“Why…” I muttered.

“What?” Doc asked turning around and looking at me.

“Why will it take so long for me to change back to normal?” I asked.

Doc sighed and went to his desk; “ You didn’t take your pill yesterday did you?” He asked me.

“I don’t want to take that damn pill. I don’t want to touch those things. I don’t even think they help.” I snapped at him.

“Hei listen to me I…” He started but I cut him off.

“Doc it’s not fair.” I stated.

“That’s the best I can do for you Hei.” He told me pulling my pills out of his desk.

“Why do you always ruin my life?” I shouted at him tears filling up my eyes. I ran over to the door and slammed it open and ran out.

I ran as fast as I could stumbling from time to time as I ran out of the school and to the woods. I sat down against a tree. It wasn’t long before I heard Katara calling for me. I pulled my legs up to my chest and just sat there not saying a sound.

“Hei, I will find you.” Katara said.

“I’m…b-behind here.” I sighed.

She found me and sat down next to me, “Are we friends Hei?” She asked me.

“I-I don’t know.” I answered not really sure if saying yes was the answer she was looking for. When I got in these kinds of moods I didn’t really want to answer anyone.

“…I think we’re are. I know you trust me just a little bit, because you have been helping me.” She answered.

“I-I just…d-don’t want to see you hurt.” I answered. ‘I really wish I wasn’t so shy around other people. I just want to be able to talk normally around the people I care about other than just Doc.’ I thought.

“What hurts is seeing someone that I call my friend hurt. So if you don’t want to see me, your friend, hurting, prove it.” She said and held out her hand I looked at her hand and she held out to me two pills. One of them I knew what it was, it was my pill for my depression, but I didn’t know what the other pill was. I took them from her and held onto them.

“I’ll tell you a secret. My mom takes pills too. My dad should take them, but he doesn’t. How do you think that makes me feel?” She told me.

“W-what is the o-other pill?” I asked her looking at the pills again.

“”It will help you change back quicker. That’s what Mr. Nightray said. Well, a strange young slightly hansom Mr. Nightray said…” She laughed a little, “Amazing what that stuff can do…” She commented.

I took the pills and swallowed them. If it meant I could be back in my own body sooner then I’ll take the pills.

“Good! Now can I see a smile?” She asked.

I smiled a little at her and she stood up and held out her hand, “Hiro is worried too. We should go back to the room and see him.”

I nodded and took her hand and ended up accidentally thinking I was back in my own light weight body again and instead of Katara helping me up I accidentally pulled her back down on top of me. I felt my face instantly heat up, “ S-sor…” I started to say and she placed a finger over my lips.

“You don’t have to apologize, I know it was an accident.” She smiled and a blush spread across her cheeks as well.

I took her hand and actually smiled at her. “D-did you w-want to g-go swimming…w-with me later?” I asked.
