Slowly with a resounding creaking noise Konno’s mother entered the room bearing a platter of watery mashed potatoes and raw Onions. She hated that dish but ate it everyday because it was the only thing they could afford. Her mother had lanky grey hair that came down in thin strings to her shoulders, exaggerating her worn body and the dark circles under her eyes from rummaging though dumpsters all day looking for recyclables to pay for their next ‘meal’. “Eat.” The mother said wryly gazing apon her daughter who looked away from the food. “I said eat! I worked all day to get you this!” She screamed angrily, tears beginning to swell in her eyes from a mixture of sadness and frustration. They never had very much and one day she hoped to present a feast but in her heart knew that such a thing would never happen to those as unfortunate as them. Konno looked to the dusty floor she sat on and did not reply to her mother who screamed “FINE!” before storming out and roughly slamming the door shut behind her making the ceiling and walls shake, loosening the dirt and old decayed wood from the rafters causing it to fall on Konno’s down cast head.
