Wolf's Rain (anime)

Being a wolf lover, Wolf's Rain was a must see for me, and I'm so glad that I watched it. External Image

Most of the main characters are wolves, but they don't necessarily talk and sing like the Disney animals do. Wolf's Rain is a fantasy/apocalyptic anime that features 4 wolves' quest for Paradise while the world is ending around them. There's obviously some action in it, but it's not exactly action-packed either. The series focuses on a lot of things, such as character maturity, different ideologies, and the journey to Paradise.

Plot Summary: The series takes place in the future, when there's hardly any wildlife left and the world is nearing an end. But there's a legend that says there is a place called Paradise, where you can always be happy and there are lunar flowers (a plant that no longer exists). However, only wolves can get into Paradise with the flower maiden, Cheza, but wolves are thought to be extinct for years. This, obviously, isn't the case though, as it turns out wolves have been able to disguise themselves among the human population by using an ancient magic that allows them to hide in a human form. When Cheza and 4 wolves (Kiba, Tsume, Hige, and Toboe) meet they embark on a quest for Paradise, which isn't as easy as it sounds. In total, the show is 30 episodes long (with 26 normal episodes + 4 recap episodes).

Plot/General:
This is another one of those animes that you can't miss a minute of, since the plot's so detailed. I had to watch Wolf's Rain 2 times through to catch everything too. That's not a bad thing though, because the anime goes at the perfect pace in terms of introducing more story and characters. The first time you watch the anime, it'll seem a little slow in the beginning, but it definitely picks up towards the end. However, there are the 4 recap episodes which are rather unnecessary, and only help develop the characters a little (since the episodes are narrated by the 4 wolves).

The series follows the plot of the Book of the Moon, which helps guide the wolves to Paradise. And like with most books, there are different interpretations of the Book of the Moon, as shown by the wolves, nobles (purely created humans), and humans. In the end of the series, a different purpose for Paradise is revealed, which isn't thought of by the characters, except one.

The characters develop nicely, and it's interesting to see how despite their very different pasts, the characters are still able to unite. Probably the best part about this anime's plot is revealed right at the end, in the last episode. The big conclusion really adds to the series and completes it, so you've gotta watch it right to the end to really enjoy it.

Art:
The landscapes/background art looks beautiful and looks pretty creative. Overall the drawing of the characters is very well too, but the wolves' proportions aren't perfect. The legs of the wolves are abnormally thin and the paws look too much like human feet (flat). However, the wolves' faces and torsos look fantastic; they're the most realistic wolf drawings that I've ever seen in a show. As for the humans, they look great. The colours are somewhat entrancing, especially in the characters' eyes, and the characters all have unique body types. Wolf's Rain is one of those rare animes in which there aren't any slip ups and the animation looks nice and smooth as well.

Characters:
Wolf's Rain has a small amount of main characters, and quite a few minor characters that pop up to help with the plot. I don't really like that kind of character and plot development, but the plot is so good and the main characters are pretty memorable, so I can excuse the lazy use of sub characters. Most of the Japanese and English voices sound very similar, but I prefer the English cast anyway. The voices in both casts sound pretty average, which helps set the perfect tone for the series, since the setting is sorta a realistic world put into a fantasy story.

Kiba: The white wolf who is chosen by the flower maiden to open Paradise. Now, you can either hate Kiba or love him. I hate him, because he's such a boring character, even though he's the main character. The guy doesn't change and he has 1 emotion, moody-thoughtful.

Cheza: My favourite character *^.^* She is the flower maiden who can lead the wolves to Paradise. She's a 13 year old, blind, plant girl who was created by Lord Darcia I with alchemy and lunar flowers. She's frightened by Darcia III and smells like lunar flowers.

Darcia III: He's the main "bad guy" of the show and he is a noble. On multiple occasions he takes Cheza away from the 4 wolves, but he starts going crazy. His fall from sanity is caused by the death of his lover, Harmona. Towards the end of the series he starts trying to kill the wolves and Cheza.

Tsume: 1 of the 4 wolves who is grey and has an X-shaped scar on his chest. He's a tough guy who goes around in a gang of smuggling humans until he meets Kiba. He only starts to get close to Toboe near the end, but throughout the rest of the series he's very distant.

Toboe: Another 1 of the 4 wolves. He's the youngest of the group (just a pup) and wears a funky bracelet on his right arm. He's very optimistic and helps cheer up some of the other characters throughout the series. When you first watch the series, you'll probably mistake him for a her... maybe they should've made him a girl. o.O

Hige: The remaining of the 4 wolves. He's a big, fat, brown wolf who loves hotdogs. He falls in love with Blue and wears a special collar.

Blue: A half dog-half wolf who starts out hunting the wolves at the command of her master, Pops. She has blue eyes, black fur, and a spiky collar. When she discovers that she's half wolf she starts to lose interest in hunting wolves.

Quent "Pops" Yaiden: The sheriff from Courios/Kyrios, a destroyed small town. He's on a vendetta against all wolves, and he uses Blue to help him track down the wolves. He's a drunkard and he carries a pretty, big, cool rifle. (My second favourite character).

Hubb Lebowski: A police detective who gets brought into the journey to Paradise by his ex-wife, Cher. He has a kinda low self esteem. He travels for a while with Mr. Yaiden, then he travels with a bunch of people.

Cher Degre: She's a researcher from the facility, where Cheza was being taken care of. She's slightly obsessed with Cheza and the wolves, and has a copy of the Book of the Moon. She's Hubb's ex-wife, but still puts up with him always hanging around her.

Jagura: She's also a noble, and is infatuated with Darcia III. She's killed many wolves, and manages to capture Cheza and lock away the 4 wolves. She opens the nobles' Paradise (which is different from the wolves' Paradise).

Sound/Music:
Another series with music by Yoko Kanno! I like the music from Wolf's Rain more than the music from Escaflowne though. The music in Wolf's Rain has so much emotion and really helps set the mood for the series. The opening song, Stray by Steve Conte, is okay, but the ending song, Gravity by Maaya Sakamoto, is amazing! Some other fantastic songs from the series are Heaven's Not Enough by Steve Conte, Tell Me What The Rain Knows by Maaya Sakamoto, and Strangers by Raj Ramayya. A lot of people also like the song Run, Wolf Warrior, Run by Joyce, but I don't really like it.

Overall Rating:
If you like wolves and if you're looking for an amazing anime= 5/5
If you hate animals, but you're still looking for something to watch= 3/5
