THATS RIGHT FOLKS! AN ANIME POST! But on an anime site? You're insane! But I digress. . .
So after hearing about the new Gundam series Mobile Suit GundamAGE, hereto referred to as AGE or whatever the hell I feel like typing at the moment. Im left with a few observations that I will now share.
1. Why is it always an orphaned kid? Seriously, in a lot of these shows, at least one kid watched at least one of their parents die by the hands of the enemy Mobile Suits that he will fight in the future.
2. The Gundam in this series looks an awful lot like the original RX-78 GUNDAM in the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. Not a bad thing, but it shows a lack of creativity in the main mechs design. On the other hand, the dragon themed Mobile Suits that the UE(Unknown Enemy) are piloting are pretty damn cool in my book. And I want to build one.
3. The background art is quite detailed, as one would come to expect from Bandai and Sunrise, especially for a Gundam title. The animation looked good, and the first mech fight of the series was okay, not good, not bad, but right in the middle. It was short and kind of anti-climatic as well.
4. My biggest concern with this show, and it may be a deal breaker with me as far as long term commitment to the series. The character design is poor. Ive tried to explain how they look on Twitter, but I cant really think of anything I can settle on as far as the look. But I know this. THEY ARENT RIGHT FOR A GUNDAM TITLE! I do not need to see chibi looking characters piloting a GUNDAM. Seriously, I hope that the story is a damn good one to keep me invested in it. I swear Emily's Grandpa looked like Dr Light from Megaman. These characters would look better in the Pokemon universe for crying out loud. The designs of these people are so off putting, I really couldnt focus on most of the episode.
As far as the first episode overall goes, it pretty much did was it was supposed to. Introductions to the main cast and the Gundam, check. Seeing a little of the Gundam in dominate action, check. Let us get a peek at what the bad guys can do, check. But unlike other Gundam titles, this one did not grab me and pull me into the world. Ill give it some time, but this may not be one worth keeping up with. And that is sad. But in the meantime. Ill have Gundam UNICORN to watch.
