My laptop is dead. The motherboard is fried.

The worst part is, nothing I did caused it to break. The guy who owns the house I'm staying at borrowed the computer. When he returned it, it never turned back on. He set it on my desk, plugged it back in, and it beeped as it was switching from battery to the power supply. As it was beeping, he shut it off. Now the repair shop that looked at it told me that that particular action is pretty much the reason that my laptop is a paperweight.
