Osashi-buri, everyone. It's been long overdue, but I've returned… for now.
I wished I could go into detail about every little thing that happened over the last few weeks, but they're out of my head now. The only things that I've been focused on during my hiatus here were health and microbiology. It's stuff that could bore most people, but I'm loving it. The thing is, I don't love my professor. :/ However, I was surprised that she remembered my name on the day I took our third exam. Woo, I'm being noticed! (Hopefully for my vast improvement from my first exam)
Anyways, despite my professor, I think microbiology is very interesting after constantly doing it for months. I certainly love the health aspect of it, but I wouldn't pursue doing anything serious in the lab for a career. One of the most important things that I've learned from this class is aseptic technique and how to prevent the growth of MDR (multi-drug resistant) microbes (microorganisms). I'm about to go on and on about microorganisms, but if you want a quick health tip, go ahead and read the next paragraph.
You know how popular hand sanitizers are now? A lot of girls I know always have a tiny bottle in their bags and I was curious whether or not they worked. Well, most do, but the thing I'm most concerned about is the potential outbreak of MDR microbes. Indigenous microflora (microbes that live on and inside us) are said to keep us safe from transient flora (outside microbes) and some pathogens (disease-causing microbes). Well, if we keep using anti-microbial soaps and sanitizers to the point of almost removing most of our flora, we are allowing the resistant ones to grow and multiply even further. These MDR microbes that grow in numbers are referred to superbugs and they are exceedingly difficult to treat. We had outbreaks at our school because of the consistent usage of Purell around the hallways. Our professor was strongly against the usage of Purell in the first place.
Anyways, yeah, notice how I've turned into a huge micro geek. I can't get enough of health. Well, I have to return to my project. I have to compile a list of 25 infectious diseases for class. Reading further about HIV really gets to me. Contracting the human immunodeficiency virus can happen in an instant and the treatment and outlook is chronic and really tragic. Treatment from most antiviral medications have a ton of side-effects. This is the kind of thing that makes me want to become a healthcare professional even further. I want to help these people by learning more and more about health.
That'll be enough of me going on about health. I might just return next Saturday and go on more about it. I might just make a separate health blog here, which will probably get no attention, haha.
Take care. Stay healthy.
