B Gata H Kei - Impressions

Hello everyone reading this. After watching seven episodes of this currently airing show, I'll give a rundown on my feelings and opinions on this show.

Overview:
To sum it up, B Gata H Kei is about a sexually deviant high school girl, Yamada, and her "quest" to get 100 sex buddies. However, hilarity ensues after realizing her own naivety and awkwardness when attempting to get into another dude, Kosuda's, pants for the first time in her life.

Positives:
I haven't seen a show that focuses on sex in a while, other than Naisho no Tsubomi, which I thought was awful. I think that it's kinda neat for an anime like this to attempt to express sex through a more real viewpoint, rather than through the annoying bombardment of ecchi and pantsu flashes.

Promiscuity appears to have a higher rate of incidence in high school, so I think the setting is appropriate. Also, the main character, Yamada, is sex crazed. I've never seen a character who's this sexually perverted before.. and to top it off, it's a girl. Overall, I like how this show attempts to get into the gritty-ness of becoming more sexually active during high school with all those hormones and whatnot.

Negatives:
After watching the more recent episodes, this is starting to feel like another harem. Kosuda, a stereotypical harem lead, is surrounded by a lot of two dimensional sticks for characters w/ C-D cups. There's nothing special about him either, other than his passion for photography and the fact that he's a virgin like Yamada as well. The only thing that differentiates him from the crop is that Yamada chose him to be his first sex partner. Now Yamada somehow is head over heels over him. Huh?

Also, there's this new character, Kanejou, who I think is exactly the same as Yamada. She is cocky and wants the attention of all the boys, except that she has boatloads of money and a bro-love complex. She also wants to steal Kosuda away from Yamada (what?!). After her introduction, I knew that there was no more hope.

I wished that this show was funnier without relying too much on perverted jokes. When they actually go into the sexual aspect of Kosuda and Yamada's relationship, it just feels ostentatious and disconnected. You never really feel anything personal with the characters, except that you may laugh at the massive awkwardness of the moment.

There's some flaws to my argument though. I'm critiquing this show because I wished that it had a more slice of life approach to it, but asking an ecchi-romance anime to turn into slice of life one is like trying to turn into a plastic Barbie doll into a real person.. you just can't.

Overall:
Other than me wishing that this was more of a slice of life anime, this is better than a handful of harem and ecchi shows out there. It is by no means, good or life changing, but it may make you laugh and wtf a lot. I personally enjoyed Sora no Otoshimono a lot more if you're looking for another more recent ecchi show to watch.

If I could rate this now, I'd probably give this show a 5 or a 6. If MAL could let me rate in the decimals, it'll most likely get a 5.5.
