First off, Florida-Girl, I got your card yesterday. It's super cute and completely approved of. Thankee!
So I'd say this year more or less broke even. Started off really well, kept going strong, stagnated a little, got really fun again for a bit, then things started falling apart all over again and now we're back on the solid ground (but still high enough above rock bottom, I assure).
Let's see now . . .
+:
- Canada rocks it at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and I take part in festivities both as a performer and as a spectator. Total once-in-a-lifetime opportunity win. Hockey gold was ridiculous as well. Also, mittens.
- Lots of sweet new games this year: Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Red Dead Redemption, Ass-Bro, Rock Band 3 . . . not the greatest year of games, but still a fairly solid one bringing new gags and jokes into our little meta-world. Plus, they announced Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception for 11/1/11!
- My first year of some super serious cosplay sewing! With my many masters Terri, Manda and Grandma, I made three amazing cosplays pretty much from scratch. And it's only gonna get better, hey?
- Super successful Sakura-Con meet-up. Lots of laughs, lots of video, and a corgi. You cannot go wrong with that.
- Cosplayed at Video Games Live. Playstation magazine took a photo of me. Allegedly this photo exists somewhere.
- Really stepped up my fandom of "Castle", and found out that a lot of my friends also gush about Castle. We're now planning Castle parties. Probably.
- Became a godfather to an amazing little kid whom I love and who's well on the path to greater geekdom. I'll try not to break him too badly, I promise!
- World Cup hilarity. Not a big soccer fan, but it was hard not to get swept up into the fun. Also, vuvuzela - I owns it.
- Brother got engaged. I got to go to Las Vegas out of it. Las Vegas is the greatest place on earth. Just sayin'.
- Had a wild experience at Anime Evolution in Vancouver. Organized the Masquerade Ball (borderline success), got some Uncharted photos with another Uncharted cosplayer finally, randomly played a ukelele at my friend's Artist Alley table, won an award for our match in the Final Fantasy Fight Tournament with our VC cosplay . . . introduced a lot of "Kill, F, or Marry" to a lot of people . . . yeah, good times.
- Operation GETPAX: where a dozen Canadians drove down to Penny Arcade Expo for a day and didn't even GO to the convention proper! Getting into Sega's Gameworks party as VIPs for cosplaying, however? That's pretty freakin' sweet. Said it then, will say it again: considering we didn't even go to the con, it was the best convention trip ever. I even made a toast at dinner and everything.
- Entered a couple film races, trying to make amateur short films in a 24 or 48 hour window. The first one was pretty fun to make. The second, not so much fun, though the screening was amazing.
- Halloween Patapon Pumpkins. That is all.
- My circle of friends got into "Last Night On Earth", probably one of the more popular zombie-survival board games out there. Having guys over for gaming nights is a nice change of pace for all of us, I bet.
- Brother got married. I was groomsman. It was perhaps the smoothest wedding I had ever been a part of. Big props to the brother and my new sister-in-law; they really knew how to throw 'em. It's gonna be fun times ahead.
- The Christmas holidays were kind to me. Lots of friends, lots of family, and in all just lots of love all around.
-:
- Found out my salary had actually reached the capping point the year before, and as such would not be getting raises until I became the department specialist. This is taking longer than I would have liked.
- Issues regarding certain theOtaku.com members which ran so deep that they actually affected my relationships with my current friends - I don't really feel like forgiving that, even if I stopped caring about all the other stuff.
- Smooshed my car fender in a stupid parallel parking incident. The other guy was very forgiving, but damn did that hurt for a long time . . . expensive, too . . .
- My best friend went out of his way to mess with another friend extremely badly. I don't really talk to this best friend so much anymore. It's all stupid and unfortunate, because it never had to go here if he had just not done what he did. Was not pleased with that.
- Lost a girl very dear to me to distance and logistics. Sucked so hard.
- Stepdad continued to have random medical troubles throughout the year, often during vacations. Exhaustion, flus and infections, even through Christmas. It was not fun for him and it makes the rest of us worry.
- My car got all gimped up with thousands of dollars of repairs. I'm pretty sure we still have a few things we need to fix, too. It's very upsetting, and disheartens my life as a car owner. Way worse than the fender-bender in the spring . . .
- Hard lessons being the leader of a major convention event. Must do better next year . . .
- Painful spat with a friend that stemmed from the fact that she (playfully) talked smack about my momma. It's surprising how some things really stand out in your mind, hey?
- Friend went through a very painful break-up. Was hard to watch her go through that.
- Was painfully offended by another friend during the second film race we did. We still haven't really talked much since. Also very unfortunate.
- Got really sick right before my brother's wedding. I feel like I've never really fully recovered ever since, either.
- Found out that apparently my mother was extremely upset about a lot of things involved with my brother's wedding, such as family seating placements and such. Decided to call me to . . . something. Very frustrating to hear someone talk about how upset they were about something, then you tell them they need to talk to people directly to fix that, and then them basically refusing to even consider it - like talking to a very upset brick wall. Not fun. She says now that she's just not gonna let it bother her, but yeah . . . I'm not so sure about that . . .
- Got a few reminders here and there on why I don't go into chat anymore.
- Lost a girl with whom I had a lot of colourful history to - of all things - the status quo. I cannot begin to express how annoying that feels. Also, this more or less caps off the year for me.
In all, I'd call it par for the course. Definitely more good than bad. But it's like golf: you don't notice when you're doing well, only when you're really crapping out.
So on that note, I'm quite happy to let the year go. It was fun, I enjoyed a lot of it, but really, methinks next year has nothing but promise. What promise, I don't know. Just that I want in on whatever that may be.
Hehe, kinda lost at the moment in all kinds of senses, y'know?
So what do I wanna do with 2011?
- Get back to job-hunting. Superstore has done well for me, but it's REALLY time to move on . . .
- Get that Flynn Rider cosplay done in time for Sakura-Con.
- Get more writing done, perhaps.
I think that'll do.
