A Canadian's Take on the 2008 US Election

Political Leanings

Last month, before the US election, Canada had its own federal election. It was stupid. There was a 58-59% voter turnout for it. No one wanted to vote for anyone this time around - they all sucked. So you'll forgive us if we kinda wish we could have had your candidates.

In America, there was a charismatic orator with a message of change on one hand; on the other, a war hero promising to right past wrongs and to be "the renegade" for what was right. Seriously, either Obama or McCain would have made for fine leaders. For Americans, it really was a choice between who people felt was the better man.

I've voted in three federal elections now. And every single time, it has always been for the lesser of evils. And that has always made me sad. We're all still waiting for that one great leader we can believe in.

So for now, we'll stick with the Conservatives who hold a minority government in Canada. They didn't win a majority, but of the 59% of the country that voted, they opted to vote for them more than the Liberals or the NDP. Sure, no one trusts the current Prime Minister - a man who broke records for attack ads while trying to portray a "friendly, family man" look. So yeh. We voted for a conservative government.

All the same, Canadians supported Barack Obama 4-to-1 over John McCain.

Historically, Canadians have voted Liberal more often than not. Probably, a good chunk of that 41% of the voting population that didn't vote would have liked to vote Liberal at least on an ideological standpoint. Unfortunately, our current Liberal party sucks. Their leader was an uncharismatic man who showed zero ability as a leader of a nation; they still have the recent history of a massive sponsorship scandal. The Liberals pissed off a lot of people this past decade, and I know for myself that I would have felt dirty voting for them even if I believed in most of their policies.

So how can a country with a Conservative prime minister back such an extreme socialist American Democrat?
