Accidental photo of '6 4 Tiananmen protests' at Chinese Asian Games removed by censors

According to Yonhap News Agency, a scene that appeared to symbolise the "6-4 Tiananmen pro-democracy protests", which are banned in China, was accidentally shown at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, leading to the deletion of the scene by state media.

It even happened on China's National Day (1 October).

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong on Thursday, China's Lin Yuwei, who won the gold medal in the women's 100-metre hurdles at the Hangzhou Asian Games, hugged her compatriot Wu Yanni, the silver medallist, on the track after the final.

A photo of the Chinese athletes embracing after collecting gold and silver medals side by side was also posted on the social media Weibo account of Chinese state media outlet China Central Television (CCTV). However, it has since been deleted.

Lin Yueyi, who played in lane 6, wore the number 6 on her jersey, while Wu Yanni, who played in lane 4, wore the number 4 on her jersey, and the hug was accidentally "6-4".

"6-4" is censored in China because it evokes the events of 4 June 1989, when Chinese authorities bloodyly crushed pro-democracy protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

While Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other countries attach great significance to the date every year on 4 June, with candles being lit at 6.04pm on 4 June to commemorate the victims of the Tiananmen Square crackdown, it is forbidden to mention it at all in China.

As a result, Chinese social media users often refer to June 4 as "35th of May" to avoid censorship.

"The apparent censorship of the photo has become a topic of ridicule on Hong Kong's popular internet community LIHKG," SCMP reported.

"A foreign power with a hidden agenda has deliberately played a small trick to politicise the sacred Asian Games," one Hong Kong poster sarcastically commented.

"Taking money from the Americans to stir up trouble again," said another, "Lane 5 is up to something!"

Uyeni, who won a silver medal in the event, was later disqualified for a false start. 토토사이트
