Today, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Crytstal Sky's CEO Steven Paul is now planning a prequel to the 2010 U.S./Japan co-production direct-to-DVD live-action action film Tekken (based on the video game with the same name), titled "Tekken: Rise of the Tournament". Though no release date is indicated, Paul indicates his hopes of having this prequel released in the North American theaters, and he also plans to include in the film's cast, actors and actresses who can look like the actual characters of the Tekken video games (like when Warner Bos. did 2008's Speed Racer with a cast who can look like the characters of the Speed Racer manga and 1960s anime).
Although I don't know much about Tekken, here's hoping this is a critical success (which 2010's Tekken flick failed to be) so as to break the tragic curse Hollywood has been doomed to suffer since the release of the 1990s live-action movie Street Fighter when it comes to doing movies based on Japanese video games regardless of how the cards were being played, metaphorically speaking. Fo now, I recommend to all you Tekken fans out there to save your judgement on Tekken: Rise of the Tournament until after you watched it from start to finish because who knows, some of you just might find it better than the previous. However, only time will tell if the prequel becomes well received by North American audiences or not.
