Normally when a host web challenge on theOtaku.com (whether a fan art-type challenge or wallpaper-type), I usually think about what media franchises are still supported by lots of fans today on a global basis (like DC Super-Heroes, Marvel Super-Heroes, Star Trek, Gundam, etc) and then base the challenge on whatever media franchise I choose as its focus. A few times, I use crossover themes as a challenge's focus. Last of all, I do these challenges not just because I like doing them for my pleasure, but also because I believe at least several others would like them and think of them as fun options.
Anyway, today marks the official closing of the fan-creation-themed fan art challenge Design A Star Trek Ship/Shuttle/Station, but ironically and unfortunately, this challenge turns out to be a total failure because no one entered it, and that's despite "Star Trek" still being one of the most popular Sci-Fi franchises today. So now I believe they're a few theories as to why no one entered this challenge:
- No one was sure what to draw and felt the task was too difficult, even though I try to make each challenge I host as easy as possilble
- people wanting to enter felt they needed to watch more "Star Trek" episodes before deciding to do their fan-creations
- the large popularity of "Star Trek" only exists outside of this website
- The people on this site are probaly too busy focusing on certain popular media franchises (like "Naruto" and "Bleach", which are amoung the most popular Anime franchise focuses on this site)
- "Star Trek" might have become dead to a lot of people on this site after they got angry about how "Star Trek" (2009) tried to revitalize the Sci-Fi franchise itself for the new generation of Sci-Fi fans
Now I'm not sure whether or not I should ever do a "Star Trek" challenge on at theOtaku.com again, especially when the failure I suffered today has a made a fool out of me in the process.
