Unexpected Guests

Sazume was happy to be woken up by the sunlight. The rain had finally stopped, and the good weather was a sign that the winter soon would be past. Thrilled, she dressed the kimono that her mother made for her to wear especially on that day, feeling the smooth touch of the fine cloth on her skin. She was almost done with tying the colorful obi around her waist when someone asked to come in.

“Hey, there, birthday girl!” She frowned slightly when her brother came in. “Still mad at me, huh?”

“A bit.”

“Come on, I even dressed up fancy, just for you!” he said, showing the white clothes similar to his father’s, with the same blue pattern on the shoulder.

“Ichi…”

He sighed, and held her hands.

“Okay, sorry! You know me… I was just a bit jealous because you wanted to be here, today.” She laughed, and received a kind hug in return. “Happy birthday, sister. Love you, you know that.”

“Me too. Thank you.” She kissed him on the face, suddenly forgetting her anger. She never seemed to stop being surprised by her brother, so conscious of his feelings, and so unafraid of expressing them. Everything in his face reminded her of their father, but the same couldn’t be said of their personalities.

Sesshomaru and Yume entered the room shortly after. She ran to their daughter and hugged her tightly, filling her face with kisses.

“Happy birthday, princess!”

“Thanks, mom! Dad...”

She observed her father as he approached. Serious, as always, but she was used to that. She knew well what was hidden under that face, and she was not surprised when he held her face and kissed her on the forehead, right over the moon’s mark. Nothing was said, but it wasn’t necessary. She smiled and hugged him back.
