"I knew I could expect good business this winter", the merchant said, looking at the string full of coins. His sons didn't seem so thrilled as they released the horses from the wagon; just as the animals, they weren't really comfortable with so many demons around.
The two startled when the tattooed face warrior drew his sword; unceremoniously, Houji cut part of the canvas that covered the wagon and checked its cargo.
"The cargo is safe, chief. The soldiers didn't have time to look at what we carried. Your men were very timely, as promised." Houji didn't answer. "You sure you don't need the horses? I can make a good price on them."
The man gulped when the fire demon turned to him.
"What are you still doing here?"
Immediately, the merchant mounted one of the horses, while his sons shared the other, and left at full speed. One of the demons laughed at the terror in their eyes.
"Shouldn't we kill them? They might warn the patrols."
"I don't waste my time with trash."
Houji looked at the sky, still lighted by the moon. The long winter night would cover one last advance. His men pushed the wagon to the trees, through which they'd keep traveling to the castle.
"Only Seikku is missing", his soldier said, counting the men. Over twenty fire demons had crossed Kumari's lands, and no one noticed it. "Should we wait for him?"
"No."
The warrior laughed.
"Anxious to deliver the surprise?" he asked, looking at the wagon.
"It's just a precaution. Everyone have arrows at the ready?"
The soldier touched his quiver, smiling.
"It's gonna get hot, chief."
"Good." Houji took the lead of the advance. "Straight to the castle, then. I have a debt to collect."
