Everyone loves updates for their computer/programs, right? Usually I don't mind them since they help keep my computer and programs running smoothly. A good example would be the other week when I acquired the first three episodes of a show I will be watching with Allamorph and Kei.
I decided to test them by playing a short snippet from the beginning only to discover that though the sound was fine the actual video was not. Talking to Desbreko and looking further into the CCCP that I used revealed that I was out of date and updating to the newest version solved the problem.
I ran into a similar problem when I tried to log into Windows Live Messenger. It indicated there was a new version but I couldn't get it until I installed some windows updates. So I went and got all of the ones I needed and then installed it. Still didn't work. I updated to the newest IE since many of the Windows programs are tied to one another... no luck.
Now yes it installed and for the most part went fine (for example IE works fine but like I care since I don't use it) but now I have an error code that won't let me log into Messenger using their software. I can go to trillian or meebo and get in but the actual Windows Live Messenger software doesn't work.
I found the apparent fix and it didn't resolve the error code. It took a while of browsing about to find out that the next step is to completely uninstall Windows Live Messenger. That way I can do a new clean install. There is no guarantee that this will even fix it.
So now I wonder if I should bother since one: I rarely use it. two: I can use other software if I really want to be connected. Three: I've spent several hours already and it doesn't seem worth the fuss.
Oh and did I mention that the Live Messenger Forum directed me to a program to fix errors in my registry but said programs would cost $30+ to use? Free download is anything but free. And why send a customer to something like that when it's likely that your software failed to update properly?
Makes me want to say this is why I love AIM but I know if I do it will bork itself somehow. And man, just when they finally got their act together in the past year and added the tabbing feature to Messenger. lol
