We arrived at the school the next morning together. Hideki came up to me with a huge smile on his face. "Did you use the notes?" He asked looking down at me, the smile never leaving his face. He was such a happy-go-lucky person.
"What notes?" Shunsuke asked, looking from me to Hideki. He shifted his duffle bag from one shoulder to the other.
"I let her borrow my notebook yesterday for Physics" Hideki answered, barely taking his eyes off of me to look at his friend.
"You could have asked me; I have the same class as this guy," Shunsuke said looking away from me. I frowned, what was that look for? What had I done wrong? I thought I was doing what he had wanted, fitting in with the humans.
"Thank you" I said, turning my attention back to Hideki who was looking at me expectantly.
He nodded and looked over at Shunsuke. "Oh your stalker is looking for you," he said.
"Who,?" Shunsuke asked looking around.
"Yuki" he answered.
"Ignore her; she is annoying," Shunsuke said walking away.
I followed behind the two boys, looking at the girl named Yuki over my shoulder. She was staring after us, an annoyed look plastered onto her pretty face. I turned around and walked up to her. I had enough of her attitude, and if Shunsuke wasn't going to set her straight, I would.
Shunsuke must have noticed I wasn't behind him anymore, because I heard him call out my name, but I didn't pay him any attention. I was doing him a favor. I approached the girl with confidence that I was going to get this settled.
"Hi," I said. "Yuki, is it?" I paused briefly before continuing without letting her get a word in. "Look, everyone can clearly see that you are in love with Shunsuke, but can't you see that he isn't interested in you?"
"Excuse me?" she said, standing up straight and moving in a little closer to me.
"You are coming across as pathetic," I said honestly. "Come on, girl. You're practically throwing yourself at him." I was cut off from saying any more when Shunsuke came over.
"Yo, Kayden, we are going to be late for class if you don't get going now," Shunsuke said, gesturing with his head towards a classroom.
"What?" I frowned, yanking my arm out of his hand. "I'll be fine. You go if you're so worried."
He sighed, shoving me behind him. "Sorry about her Yuki, she's too blunt for her own good," he started pushing me back as he backed up. "I'll talk to her about it, so don't worry." With that, he turned around and shoved me backwards around the corner.
"What is your problem?" I asked him, stopping him in his tracks. I didn't enjoy being pushed around by anyone.
"My problem?" he asked sternly. "You're the one insulting everyone."
"I was just trying to help get her off your back. This way she'll leave you alone. The girl needs some guidance, and if you aren't going to tell her you have no interest in her, then I will. She deserves to know."
"The way you went about it wasn't right. You probably just made her even more upset. She probably hates you now, and I wouldn't be surprised if she did some nasty things to you now. I can't keep babysitting you."
"Babysitting me? Isn't it the other way around. You'd be long dead if it wasn't for me," I huffed, crossing my arms over my chest. My face was red with anger, but my voice was icy calm.
"A lot of these demons showed up here after you arrived!" he cried in exasperation. "I'm thankful for you saving me, but sometimes you're a handful."
I stopped short of an insult I was ready to lash out with. "Well, I'm sorry I'm such a bother to you," I said finally. With that, I turned and walked down the hall. Shunsuke called out my name, but I didn't stop. I saw Hideki at the other end, but I brushed passed him and walked into my first period class.
Did he think this was easy for me? I didn't like knowing I was such a screw up. And the part about the demons arriving after I had gotten here was half correct. They were after me just as much as they were after him. I was bringing a lot of danger to Shunsuke and the rest of these kids by just being in the same room as them.
I didn't want to leave him, as I was starting to enjoy my time here. As much as I hated to admit it, I enjoyed these humans' company. They weren't as bad as everyone had made them out to be, myself included. How were we supposed to live together with as much hurt words in the air between us?
"I think you went a little far that time, my Lady," Dia whispered so the other kids in class wouldn't be able to hear her. Of course I did. My temper always got the better of me. I had thought I was helping Shunsuke, but it seemed I always made him work over time covering for my slip ups.
"I know," I grumbled, sinking even lower into my chair. I didn't take notes again today, I just doodled in the notebook, wondering how the day was going to turn out.
