Even though most of my fellow housemates tended to frighten me with their outgoing personalities, I still found myself enjoying their company, their presence. It was better than living in solitude, in the least. Besides, the forests that surrounded the mansion were flooded with woodland creatures, a good number of them I’d already befriended.
Most of my time I spent roaming the countless hallways of the building in silence or staring out the windows at the natural wonderland that was available to me. Next to no one bothered me, and, for that, I was grateful. Though I did secretly wish I could make some friends. It was such a foreign practice to me, and, with my lack of experience, I was hopelessly lost.
Wrenching myself from my thoughts, I began to trek one of the hallways once more, searching for the library. While I wasn’t a lover of literature, it seemed like a serene, empty place, and, with all of the variety, I figured I could give reading a chance.
On the way, I was intercepted by the scantily-dressed blonde girl from the other night at dinner. Golden eyes stared me down, eying me with vengeance and disdain.
“What are you looking at, Pixie?” she sneered, flipping her long locks over her shoulder.
“Ah... n-nothing,” I stammered, turning my eyes to the floor.
“Wrong! Your eyes are feasting upon the most beautiful creature here, not that you would understand. Vevila Vanora is my name, but I’d prefer if you didn’t speak to me at all,” she chimed, her eyes flashing. “A scrawny wannabe like yourself would never appreciate beauty such as my own.”
Stunned, I didn’t know how to respond; I opened my mouth to speak, but no words formed. Rolling her eyes, she ran a gnarled hand through her lovely hair, the appearance of it striking a combination of disgust and confusion.
She let out an exasperated groan.
“Ugh, you’re a waste of time and space,” she scoffed, turning up her nose. Under her breath, she added, “I can’t believe I have to endure this for my comb.” And that made no sense to me.
Shaking off the encounter, I continued down the hallway until I located the library, stepping inside the sanctuary of old books and serenity.
Though it was rare for anyone to leave anything in the room, on one of the desks laid an open notebook, no owner in sight. Curiosity overwhelming me, I slunk over to the desk, claiming the chair and leaning over the book.
Under the dark canopy, a dense fog rolled in from the depths of the abysmal forest, curling about the twisted roots like a swarm of vipers. From the darkness, a single, luminescent orb made itself known, igniting a path through the woods. He stepped forth, a tall man swathed in layers of magic and mayhem, mystery and chaos. The light flickered from atop his staff, the spherical gem’s glow dying out.
Dying leaves danced around the man’s ankles, caressing the folds of his robe as they fluttered in the breeze. He paid them no mind, staring with an unnatural intensity at the clustered foliage before him.
With a wave of his hand, the man froze the haze before him, controlling it with sheer mental capabilities. He laughed with glee, his pride nonpareil. As he gave a shrill whistle, countless wolves in the distance howled at the night sky, answering his call. Soon, he would enact his plan. Soon, he would conquer all.
“Like what you’re reading, sugar?” a gentle, coy voice asked from behind me, startling me from my reading.
Without thinking, I leaped from the chair, spinning on my toes to face them, breathing sharply as I took in his features. He was... adorable. Not in a child way, just... rather attractive. With his vintage-looking jacket and a newsboy cap, he was like a poster child for some name brand company. It was a strange realization, how much I found myself... admiring him.
“Ah, s-sorry. I didn’t mean t-to snoop,” I murmured, casting my eyes down to hide my blush. Chuckling, I saw him move closer from my peripheral vision.
“It’s no problem at all,” he replied, his voice insisting I look up at him. When I did, he offered a kind smile. “The name’s Ace. And might I have the pleasure of knowing your name?”
“I... I’m Solana,” I whispered, trying to match his smile. “You’re a good writer.”
“Thanks, sweetheart.” After retrieving his notebook and pen, he scratched at his head, lifting the edge of his cap to reveal... fur?
“Um... if you don’t mind me asking... what... exactly...” I began, choking up. Even with the others’ intrusive comments, I couldn’t bring myself to make similar ones.
“I’m a Fennec. A fox,” he answered with a sly smile. To prove his words, he tugged off his hat, his ears twitching as they escaped.
“Ooh,” I cooed, eyes widening. My hand twitched at my side, the generic nymph part of me desiring to pet him. Though he was part human, I was already drawn to the animal part of him. That could be complicated.
Without my permission, he tenderly guided my hand to his ears, and, to my surprise, I didn’t flinch away. How... peculiar. The last person who’d touched me without receiving some obnoxious reaction had been... my brother.
“So, my dear, what might you be?” Ace questioned, hiding his laugh, as I timidly stroked his fur, giving me an amused grin instead.
“I’m a nymph.”
“I should have guessed that. You’re too darling to be anything but.”
“S-specifically a c-cloud n-nymph,” I continued, my cheeks burning in what I figured was a wonderful shade of crimson.
“That would explain the wings, hmm?” He glanced pointedly at my fluttering appendages. I nodded. “Well, if you ever want to read anymore of my story, come find me.”
“Ah... yes. Definitely!” I nodded again, offering a small half-smile. “Thank you.”
“My pleasure, angel,” he grinned, sending a wink my way. “See you around, Solana.” With that, he placed his cap back upon his head, tipped it in a gentlemanly fashion, and strode out the door, a bounce in his step.
“Bye... Ace.”
Trembling a bit, I sat back in the chair, bowing my head and leaning it on the surface of the desk.
I couldn’t explain it. He... intrigued me. I couldn’t wrap my head around it.
“That was sooo adorable!” a shrill voice called from somewhere to my right, nearly making me jump out of my skin. I lifted my head to meet the blue eyes of none other than Kateri. “Ohmygosh, I know he kinda flirts with like everyone well every girl but still. Do you like him?”
Caught off guard by her interrogation, I only blinked at first.
“Um... well... he’s nice... and... sweet,” I proffered, shrugging.
“Oh come on. Admit it! You do! ♪♬ Solana and Ace, sitting in a tr ♬—” she sang, but I managed to cut her off.
“No no no,” I breathed, wide-eyed. “I... I just met him. Kateri...”
“Oh. Sorry! I just kinda thought you might possibly look cute together! You know, a nymph and her fox! Teehee,” she giggled, skipping toward the door. “Tell me when you aren’t denying it anymore!”
Groaning, my shoulders slumped, and I let my forehead smack the desk again.
Though I’d never experienced any sort of relationship, let alone any of the romantic variety, I had a strange feeling that Kateri was right. And, to be honest, I almost wished she wasn’t.
I had enough problems to deal with on my own, after all.
