MELINA
"You fool!"
Pain...I felt it everywhere.
"I thought it would work."
"You thought?!"
How had they caught me...everything was a blur.
"She was my project, Doctor!"
"Well that was a mistake, to put you in charge of anything!"
"Give me another chance."
"No. I'm done giving you chances. I don't care if she is your blood."
"But--"
"She is mine now. Mine."
~~~~~~~
I shivered as the rain soaked through my jacket. Hopefully I could at least get a chance to dry off where I was going. I went over the directions again in my head, making sure I was still on track. If I was, the house should be somewhere up ahead...
And there it was. The biggest house I had ever seen in my entire life. Would they even let a soaked, mud-splattered stranger in a place like this? Slowly I made my way up the driveway to knock on the door of the mansion. Nothing happened. I knocked again, and this time the door opened to reveal a tall man who didn't look pleased.
"What?"
I tried not to tense too much. "Um...I was given this address..."
"Who is it, dragon-boy?"
"For the thousandth time, I am--"
"A wyvern." The man just looked at me, and I could feel my face turning red. Oh my gosh, why did I say anything...
"I might like this girl." The man moved aside so I could come in. A girl stood behind him, rolling her eyes, then she directed her attention to me. Suddenly her expression changed.
"Melina?"
"What? How do you..."
"Griffin, go get..."
"The anti-social one. On my way."
I cocked my head. "Who? And how do you know me?"
The girl smiled. "You'll see. I'm Akira, by the way."
"Nice to meet you..."
KEEFER
Nightmares suck, just so you know. If you're lucky, you wake up before they're over. I almost wanted to thank whoever was knocking on my door. Until they knocked again and I heard Griffin's voice.
"Will you wake up already?"
I opened the door. "What do you want?"
"Akira wants you downstairs."
"Fine."
"Now."
I growled. "I said I would come, bat-wings."
The wyvern's eyes narrowed. "Are you trying to start a fight, Keefer?"
"Griffin...I'm running off about three hours of sleep. Sorry, didn't mean to snap."
"Just go downstairs before Akira comes up to drag you down."
"I'm going already. Geez." I pushed past him and made my way downstairs. This was not going to be a good day...
"There he is." Akira was waiting at the bottom of the stairs with her arms crossed. Was she hiding a smile? Whatever. I was too tired to care.
"Yeah, here I am."
"And so cheerful."
"What do you need?"
"Need you to find a room for the new girl."
"Why couldn't dragon-boy do it?"
"Because I want you to."
"Forget it."
"Keefer."
"Keefer?"
I froze. I knew that voice...
Akira smiled at the look on my face and motioned someone over. It couldn't be...
"Melina?"
She smiled. "Hi, Keef--" Before she'd finished, I had her in a bear-hug and swung her around. She giggled just like she had when she was little. And suddenly, everything felt right.
