Akira
I had been happy all day today. It was weird. Everybody noticed as well, and it was hard to notice, not to mention, walking straight was really hard. I didn’t expect last night to happen but it did and honestly, I still couldn’t believe that it happened, but yet, I was really happy it did.
A few days passed and Griffin stopped staying the night with me, or at least, even in the same room. I could tell something was wrong, and I had a feeling it was my fault for some reason. He kept avoiding me, avoiding eye contact, and everybody was starting to wonder why.
This whole last night, I was talking to Charlie, who had finally decided to contact me and tell me to bring the club. Apparently, he was safe now and had been for about a day or two but he wanted to make sure that he was before he contacted me. He had killed off the last of the X.L. men in Germany and to make sure the bodies weren’t found, he burned them in a random ditch in the middle of nowhere. I was tired and irritated, besides the fact that Charlie just wouldn’t stop talking and kept me up all night, I was irritated at Griffin. More like angry, but whatever.
Once I had found out that some of the members were at a cafe for breakfast, I woke up the rest of the club and brought them there so I could make the announcement that we were going to head to Charlie right after breakfast. Some were distraught and some were excited, but I didn’t care, because this was the first real time I got to finally talk to Griffin.
I told him I was feeling upset, that I felt like I did something wrong that night to make Griffin leave the room, and I found out it was the opposite completely. Griffin was blaming himself, thinking that what he was doing, what he was thinking, was wrong. After talking for a little bit, I got him to stop feeling this way and to not feel like he betrayed me. I didn’t want him to feel like that. Right after convincing him that he was now a rebel in his own culture, we headed back inside to finish up breakfast. We kept on holding hands the whole time through breakfast and I found it really nice. He didn’t mind that I was holding it with a firm yet soft grip.
After breakfast, people asked me where we were going and I told them just to follow me. I had the directions on my phone that Charlie had given me and once we had rented cars and checked out of the hotel with all of our stuff in the cars, everyone followed me to Charlie’s.
I would have to say that his house was really out in the middle of nowhere. It was way outside Munich, practically in farmland and on a single lane road. I had to stop myself a few times to make sure I was going the right way with Griffin’s help but once I saw a small, white mansion and a sign in front of the house saying, “Charlie Corners, Praktiker und Wissenschaftler, Arzt und Biologe.” All I got was Biology, so I had to guess Biologist. Interesting...
I parked beside the house in the nice driveway he had and then realized that behind his house, seemed to be a bunch of... robots? Machines? Something or other. There was a bunch of metal though and tents. But when you look at the house, it looks completely different. There were beautiful flowers in front of it, like a professional garden, and a vegetable garden as well. I know for a fact Charlie had a black thumb when it came to gardening. He didn’t tell me he had a girl in his life, but it made sense I saw a girl sitting on the porch of the mansion. She was beautiful, I had to admit. She had wavy, blond hair down to her waist, and she was wearing a black dress underneath her white lab coat. I couldn’t tell what her eye color was, but she had glasses on. She had high cheekbones and pierced ears as well, and I could only tell that because her earrings glistened. She smelled of chemicals and a weird werewolf smell... or at least, a wolf smell. She had to be at least Charlie’s age, if not a few years older or younger. I couldn’t tell.
She looked up from what she was doing, which seemed to be reading a book, and stood up once we got out of the car.
“Entschuldigen Sie mich? Sind Sie Charlie Schwester?” She spoke in German as she came down the and walked on the pathway that went through the garden over to us. I wasn’t sure if I should take my hat off to show her that I was part werewolf, only because she said Charlie.
“Sorry? Did you say something about Charlie?” I asked and she relaxed as she got closer.
“So you speak English?” Her German accent was heavy but I understood her well enough. “I am sorry I spoke in my fluent German to you. I should have figured you were American by the way you dress.” Uh. “I am sorry if you take that as an insult as well,” she said nervously. “Anyways, I asked you if you are Charlie’s sister?” I smiled and nodded. “Can you prove it to me? I’m sorry I have to ask but it’s formalities.” This was a little weird, but I slipped off my beanie that I had been wearing since we exited Munich, and slipped my tail out. She smiled once she saw them.
“Of course. I see the similarities between you two now. Just follow me inside and hopefully, nothing will explode. Charlie might be experimenting down in the basement,” she said, sighing hopefully and I raised my eyebrows as we all followed her up to the house. People from the club eyed me and tapped me on the shoulder, trying to find out who she was and I shrugged, unable to answer them.
“You are... Akira, correct? That’s your name?” The girl asked as we got to the front door and I nodded. Hearing Japenese come out of a German woman’s mouth was weird.
“And you are?” I asked her and she smiled as she turned the handle on the door.
“Christina,” she said as she opened the door and once she did, smoke just came out from the house. “Nicht schon wieder! Charlie!” She yelled as she stormed inside the house, directing us to the living room before she went off and through a door, which obviously led to a basement. She left the front door open though to get all of the smoke out. Practically everyone was coughing from the leftover smoke that was still in the house, but people weren’t really paying attention to that. They were paying attention to the nice furniture, the chandelier, and just everything about the mansion that was everything of fancy and exquisitely white.
At first, I heard a bunch of yelling going on, and so did everyone else, before I started to hear footsteps pounding up the stairs, along with a lot of high heel clicking.
“Was meinst du, ist jemand für mich da? Ich bin nur erwartet Akira heute!” I heard a man yell and I had to guess that was Charlie, no matter what. His voice sounded off, like something was wrong with his voice box, but he sounded completely normal. Huh.
“Ich habe dir gesagt, es ist Akira, Sie Schwachkopf! Sie ist hier mit ihrem Verein! Nun, werden Sie mit der Haltung zu stoppen und ihnen etwas Schönes statt die Wahrheit zu sagen nach rechts weg?” She exclaimed and I had no literal understanding of that except Alice, I think it was, understood.
“The truth?” Alice questioned and a lot of us shrugged. I was starting to be really confused, but once I saw Christina come up the stairs and was standing outside the door, I saw Charlie and I was even more confused than I was about him.
He wasn’t the Charlie I knew anymore. He was human, not werewolf.
His dirty blonde hair was still the same, and was brought back in a braid because it was so long, though some part of it was missing in the back of his head. His bangs covered most of his eyes, but it was kind of impossible to cover one, because it was gradually bigger than the other in size and in pupil. From my direction, his right eye was like normal, blue and pure, but his right one was bigger, his pupil was bigger, and it was pure black. The iris was black, the pupil black, and the sclera was black as well instead of white. He had on a white lab coat and a white dress shirt underneath it that was splattered with... blood? It was splattered with something I couldn’t quite make out. He was wearing black dress pants and was barefoot, but I could tell from here, he had so many scars on his feet, his hands, his neck, and his face. He had a black ear and a white ear, and his tail didn’t exist. His claws didn’t exist and neither did his fangs. There was nothing that resembled that he was ever werewolf.
“Charlie?” I asked as I stood up and looked at him. He looked over at me and smiled. A few of his teeth were missing but were replaced by... wolf’s teeth? I have no idea.
“Hey, Sissy,” and that’s when I knew it was him. The voice. He may look different, but he was Charlie. He was the only one that called me Sissy. I immediately ran to him and jumped up on him to hug him. Damn, he’s tall. He swung me around and smiled once he put me down. There was something off about that smile. He was hiding something.
“You hurt. What are those, porcupine quills, Sissy?” He asked with a smile.
“Yeah, they are. X.L.-”
“Ah. Xeno. Got it,” he smiled and then he turned to the group.
“So who wants something to drink? Eat? I have a practical feast in the fridge,” He said, making it short. Right. I forgot how short he talks, and how much he doesn’t talk. Some spoke up, hoping for some tea or coffee and something to eat, like a sweet and Christina nodded and went off to get what they wanted. Charlie just stood there, awkwardly waiting.
“So, Charlie-” Charlie’s head whipped towards Griffin. “-how are you human?” He asked and before Charlie was able to answer, Kateri spoke up.
“What’s wrong with your eye?”
“Why do you have two different colored ears? It is quite ugly,” Amor pointed out and that’s when questions started and I could tell Charlie was getting frustrated and once Christina came back into the room, he relaxed because she got all of them to quiet down as she put the tray filled with food and pitchers of drinks on it on a coffee table in front of all of us. I wasn’t really hungry. Charlie’s body language was unsettling.
“What’s Christina to you, bro?” I asked and he looked at me after looking up at Christina, who was now behind him, getting a chair for the both of them to sit in.
“She’s my fiance,” Charlie said and my eyes went wide. Well, I wasn’t expecting that.
“How did you meet her?” The smile Christina had dropped and Charlie’s slightly dropped as well. He immediately averted my eyes.
“I met her while I was with Xeno.” He cleared his throat and I narrowed my eyes.
“How? Wouldn’t it be hard to do that?” I asked and he chuckled nervously.
“Well yes... She was my scientist.” That’s when people stopped eating and we all stared at Christina.
“And... she’s... not with X.L. anymore?” I asked, trying to be calm about this.
“No, of course not. She hated what she did to me. She renounced her ways and helped those who needed it. She helped me escape from the building and kill those who were in it and she’s been with me ever since,” he said, his smile lightening up as Christina had both of them sit down once she got chairs and kissed her on the cheek. This was weird.
“What about your eye?” I asked and he sighed.
“Mess up in experimentation.” What? Experimentation? Everyone noticed this and Charlie went wide eyed. “Whoops, didn’t mean to say that,” He chuckled but we all continued to stare at him.
“E-Experimentation?” Karin piped up, and I could tell she was remembering her nightmares.
“See, I told Akira to bring you all here to tell you the truth,” Charlie started out but he got stopped by Christina slapping him on the side of the head.
“Idioten,” she mumbled and Charlie rolled his eyes with a smile but then faced us once more without one.
“The truth being...?” Sebastian asked, wanting him to continue.
“Well, I’m just going to be blunt,” Charlie sighed. “You’re all experiments made by Xenogenesis Labs, or at least most of you. You all have a chip in your brain that made you forget your real life. And none of the appendages on you are actually real. They are only real on some of you, like Aerith and Heiji. Now-” Charlie stopped mid-sentence because he saw the expressions from everyone.
I honestly had no reaction.
As everything started to erupt with questions and people fainting, I was one of the few who got lost in their thoughts. That memory with Karin from, maybe a year or two ago even, with me meeting her on a lab table, made almost too much sense. The reason why our scientists hid everything, trying to keep us from remembering the torture we went through. A microchip in our brain to distort the real memories from the fake ones. Being experiments... there was something Hiraku said to me. It was hard to remember, but it was almost too easy. He said I was to be a weapon. A weapon for X.L. so that they could steal more people, more... children, and experiment on them to make an army. They wanted to take over the world (it sounds ironic) but it was true. They were scientists and they wanted to be noticed instead of ignored.
Something in me didn’t feel right. This was all so wrong.
And that’s when the memory came to me. When I was wrenched away from my family, and how my father was really killed.
He was killed right in front of Charlie and I with a gun in our own house. He wasn’t a werewolf. Dad was a normal human. Charlie and I got away but after Dad’s funeral, we were captured. I was in captivity for years, that is until about a year or two ago. I stole the hard drive from a computer by the time they had dropped me off at my house and Karin and Sebastian in Paris to keep themselves from getting caught by the government.
Soon enough, something was planted on all of our laps once things started to quiet down. It was a manilla folder with our names and pictures on it, and when my fingers moved across it, I was scared suddenly. I didn’t want to open it. I knew what was inside it. It was all about me. The details of why I was what I was. Why I had a tail, why I had porcupine quills, why I had wolf ears and wolf like instincts. I would look at it when I wanted to. Everything about this... it felt so wrong, so sad, so messed up. I wanted to puke from disgust of what Xenogenesis really was but yet... I expected something like this, what with my memories being distorted and getting confused with other memories. I felt... lost.
But a chip in my brain? They literally invaded my brain? I shuddered at the thought.
That’s when we all heard a clang in the kitchen that made us all jump and Charlie just looked annoyed.
“God, I bet he’s chugging the milk again,” he exclaimed and Christina groaned.
“Sam! Was zum Teufel machst du da? Sind Sie tuckern die Milch wieder?” Christina called as she walked into the kitchen. Wait, Sam?
“Ja, so?” That was Sam’s voice and Ela stood up in curiosity. She remembered the name.
“So? Kommen Sie hier und treffen Sie unsere Gäste anstatt zu essen unser Essen!”
“Ja, ja,” He called back as he walked into the living room and stopped as he saw us. He looked completely fine, Sam did. His hair was a bit longer, and his face was filled with food. He had on a white lab coat like Charlie and was dressed nicely, but he paused immediately.
“Shit,” He muttered as he swallowed his food but before any of us could even stand to confront him, Ela strode over to him and decked him right across the cheek. He fell on the floor and tried to scoot away from Ela as she advanced on him.
“Don’t, Ela!” Tommy and Charlie exclaimed at the same time.
“He works for me, Ela!” Charlie immediately spit out and we all turned to him.
“How in the hell does he work for you? We works for Xeno! He let those scientists experiment on us!” Ela yelled.
“I don’t know what was for the best, Ela, honest!” Sam exclaimed and her head whipped back to him. He held up his hands in surrender. “I’m serious! Right after my father let you all go, I couldn’t do what he wanted me to anymore! He wanted to experiment on me, or at least that was the impression I got from him! He started to do tests on me so I escaped before anything happened! I knew about Charlie and his fiancee and what had happened here in Germany at the base here! I knew if he was in contact with Akira, I could get in contact with you, but the only way I could do that was by working for Charlie and hiring Thomas to find you to tell you all to get out of the mansion! They were going to attack the mansion again, but this time, they were going to most likely kill over half of you because you were remembering and they knew you were!” Sam panted after he said all of that quickly and we all stared at him. Wow.
“Wait, so I was working for Xeno’s leader’s son?” was the only thing that came out of Tommy’s mouth.
“Yes, you were working for me while I worked for Charlie. He helped me and helped me learn everything! I’ve been at his house for the past few months!” he exclaimed, afraid he would hit again but Ela backed off and he got up slowly. Charlie didn’t pay any mind to this really. He just looked at Sam, completely serious yet bored.
“Go prepare the jet, will you?” he asked and Sam nodded.
“Yes, sir,” He panted and he hurried out the door. I could tell Ela didn’t like that but she came back over to us and sat down.
“Akira? Griffin? Could I talk to you two privately, please?” I jumped at Charlie’s voice and looked over at him. He was still sitting, but this time, just looking at Griffin and I. I turned my head to Griffin and saw that he was as shocked as I was, except he was looking through his file and didn’t pay attention to what just happened with Sam. I nudged him and he jumped as he looked up and turned to me. I nodded towards Charlie and he just nodded and we both got up, held our folders and followed Charlie into the kitchen, which was exquisite in detail, but I wasn’t exactly paying attention to that right now.
I just looked at Charlie, who had a sad look on his face. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket but I didn’t think anything of it.
“Look, I have something to tell you both, and you aren’t going to like it. C-”
“Um, Griffin?!” I heard Karin exclaim in a worried tone and my head whipped towards her, and so did everyone else’s. We hurried back over to the group and saw her staring at Sebastian’s phone. They both were staring.
“What is it, Karin?” Griffin asked in a worried tone.
“Um.. W-What’s your last name?” That was an odd question.
“Alatum. My last name is Alatum,” Griffin said, pondering what she could mean. “Why? What is wrong?” I heard Christina take a small gasp.
“S-Somebody just popped up on the scanner. Somebody named... Cyrus Alatum.” It couldn’t be. Cyrus was dead. Griffin and I both knew it. Griffin immediately rushed over to Karin and snatched the phone from her and he wouldn’t stop staring at the blinking dot. I brought out my phone and turned on the program. The vibration from earlier was a notification telling me somebody new popped up on the program, and he was in Virginia, exactly where my house was. Something was wrong here.
“That’s what I was going to tell you and Akira, Griffin... Cyrus is alive, and why he just popped up, I’m not entirely sure, but X.L. has done something and brought him to exactly where the mansion is,” Charlie sighed. “Something is wrong and we must all get back. I know all of you are annoyed with the sudden plans and coming here to just hear me talk and tell you the truth about yourselves, but I do have something to make up for all of this and that is we are all taking my private jet back to America where each of you will be served individually of whatever needs you may have.” Most of the members exclaimed in small bouts of happiness but it died down quickly just as much as it was brought up. “We have to leave immediately, so if you all will follow me out of the back door of my house to my private jet.” As all of the members filed past me to follow Charlie and Christina, including Karin and Sebastian, I just stared at Griffin, who still had the phone in hand.
His brother was alive, we all had chips in our brains, and we were experiments made by X.L.. Stolen away from our families. I felt invaded and illegally searched throughout my whole body and memories, but all I could do was just... walk and continue on.
“Griffin?” I pondered as I walked over to him and placed my hand on his shoulder. He didn’t move.
“He is... alive. My brother is alive...” was all he could say.
“Come on, Griffin. Let’s get you to your brother,” I said and he gave a small nod. I led him out of the house and Christina locked the door behind me once we exited the house. She followed us over to the bright red jet that was in the backyard, which I didn’t notice before when we got here and I saw all of our luggage that was in the cars we rented for only a day being loaded under the jet.
Once Griffin and I got on the plane and got in our seats, we were immediately served drinks by, I think, servants that worked for Charlie. Christina closed the door up and we all stayed quiet as we buckled up and looked at our files. As we started to lift off, with Sam being the pilot, I finally bothered to open up my file.
Hours passed as I looked through my profile and kept an eye on Griffin. He had been staring out the window at the clouds this whole time. He had his file in hand, untouched since he had opened it at Charlie’s house. He didn’t look well, but then again, I probably didn’t either.
My file wasn’t pretty. I was the main target for their world “domination.” I was to be the main weapon for them. It showed all of my weaknesses, all of my strengths, and my parents and what they had done to make themselves be killed, or at least, that’s what I assumed of my mother, since there was an “UNKNOWN” under her living status. It said that my parents had found out about them through Charlie’s Nobel Prize winning years and years ago, when they were interviewed by them and one man nicknamed, “The Creator,” but once my parents found out that they were interested in only their children, they backed off and tried to keep us as safe as possible, but that didn’t work. My mother disappeared and my father died by their hands and we were captured by them. It didn’t say too much after that, just saying that my brother escaped and I was a good test subject and did everything I was told, but then again, I don’t think I was in the right mind.
I don’t think I am now.
I smirked as I heard Sam ask for Ela to come to the cabin so that he could talk to her and everyone else either smiled or smirked. I didn’t want to try and grab Griffin’s attention, and I could tell Charlie was busy answering everyone’s questions about Xenogenesis Labs. I sighed. Maybe going to sleep was the best thing, but I had too much on my mind to sleep.
Hours passed once more, and I had to guess I fell asleep because we were landing in Virginia as we spoke, but once I looked out the window that Griffin was still looking out of, I saw smoke off in the distance. Wait, that’s...
Once we got ourselves on the private jet and got to the parking lot of where my cars were, I saw the smoke a lot more clearly, and that’s when I realized something. It was coming from where my house was. No. No. Please no.
I hurried into my car and Griffin hurried after me. He was barely able to make it in inside the car as I started it up and sped off. Everybody else tried to keep us as I sped out of the airport and onto the highway to my house. It couldn’t be on fire, it couldn’t be on fire, it just couldn’t be.
But when I turned into my driveway, it was. I rushed out of my car to see it, only to see a man tied up in chains in front of the burning house that looked almost exactly like Griffin and Griffin rushed over to him as we all stood in shock. I realized then that father’s metal box was still inside the house, inside of the pool table. Not realizing what I doing, I ran on all fours into the fire..
My mansion was on fire. Most of it was already gone.
We didn’t have a home.
We were experiments made by X.L.
We had a chip in our brains that erased our real memories and told X.L. where we were every second of every day.
Everything was going wrong. So wrong. I wanted to cry and just keel over. Nothing was right about me.
I felt weaker than I ever had before.
Everything was ruined.
