Chapter 2
Will to Will
I stared at him with a blank face and empty eyes. Tears were no more. Images of the blood splatters and awful thoughts of what happened to my parents flooded my mind. There was a long pause between me and the Keith that led to some awkward silence. I took my eyes off him and stared out the window that over looked many cars parked side by side and busy. I wanted to jump out of that window and be free of this pain and I was really about to until Keith finally spoke. “I understand if you are not comfortable talking about this right now,” he said with a hint of pity. “I also want to explain to you how important it is for this to get done as soon as possible,” he continued, back into a professional tone. I glanced at him again then back out the window. I didn’t know what to say to him. Was I ready? Did it matter? I had to go through this anyway? And most important: Did they know they were going to be murdered? That question kept bouncing all around in my head. They had to know something was going to happen because they already had a will ready. I had to find out. “Sir, when my parents wrote their will did they tell you why they were writing a will so soon in their lives?” I said looking out the window still. He hesitated then said, “I had tried to ask them out of curiosity but they said nothing.” I looked at him in hopes for a better answer but he just sat there with his legs crossed and brief case in his lap. “I’m so-“ he began to say but I interrupted, “It’s okay. Let’s just get this over with.” He nodded and put the brief case beside me opening carefully. “It reads here:
To our dearest daughter,
Please do not be afraid. We can’t explain much. Yes, we did know that this was going to be how things turned out. We protected you from them and now you must follow what we say. You must leave as soon as you can. We have a place for you to go. Mr. Aber has been enclosed of the information. You are to tell no one that you are leaving and where you are going. Everything we own is yours. We love you so very much Isis. We will always be watching over you.”
Tears found its way down my cheeks. I quickly wiped my face with a tissue and looked at Keith. “I have already made arrangements for you and also-“Keith paused “dinner arrangements.” A nurse came in checking on things and Keith quickly closed everything up. “Looks like you can leave now doll,” the nurse said with a bright smile. “I will be taking her home,” Keith said gathering his stuff together. “Okay,” the nursed said as she removed my IV. I was getting sweaty from the lack of blood and I began to tense up, clenching my fists. “I will let you get dressed,” Keith said following the nurse out of the room. I quickly got dressed and hurried out the door.
Keith led me out of the hospital and to a black Dodge Charge. He opened the door for me and I slid in to the other side. He slid in beside me, taking me by complete surprise. “What are-“I asked frantic and dizzy from lack of energy. “We need to feed you now,” he said. “We have no time to get some anywhere else,” he continued. He unbuttoned his dress jacket and slid off. Then he pulled up the sleeve on his shirt, willing his wrist towards me. I hesitated, not wanted to do this at all. But the need for blood took over. I bit into his wrist and warm sweet liquid greeted me. After a minute he pushed me away holding his wrist. He pulled out a vial of clear liquid and poured the mysterious liquid on his wrist. Just then the bit marks were I bit him closed up and vanished. “What was that?” I asked confused. Is he human? I asked myself. “Never mind that,” he said quickly. “We have to go.” He slipped into the driver’s seat and put on his sun glasses then started the car.
The ride was smooth but not at all comforting. He drove in silence as if nothing had happened. I stared out the window not recognizing a thing. I sat there pondering in my painful thoughts. I had so many questions, bursting to be answered, but no one could answer my questions. I would have to find out on my own. There are a lot of things I don’t know about my world. I realized I would have to start with my parents. I would have to dig up their pasts and lives up until their death. The car came to a stop at this old gas station in the middle of nowhere. “I will be right back,” Keith said glancing in the rear view mirror at me. He slipped out and went inside to pay for gas. He came out with a bag of extra stuff. He put the bag on the passenger seat. It smelled strongly of grease and onions. Bleh. I held my nose as he finished pumping the gas, trying not to breathe in gasoline fumes and onions. He sat down and started the car. “Would you like a grape soda?” he asked in a casual voice. I nodded, not wanting to be rude. He handed me a can of purple soda and then ate his cheesesteak. He caught me staring at him and asked, “Did you want some?” He offered half of it to me and I just shook my head no. It didn’t even look delicious. I stared back out the window feeling exhausted. I drifted off as Keith sped down the road.
When I awoke I was staring at a ceiling. Confused, I sat up and looked around. Keith was asleep in the chair across the room. We must be in a hotel, I thought. I decided to go take a walk outside. When I walked out the door the motel was deserted, only two cars occupied the parking lot. I continued to walk towards the road lost in thought about the last few cherished memories I had of my parents. I missed them so much. I looked up to the night sky full of beautiful stars. “Are you really watching me right now?” I whispered out loud. With my heightened senses I could hear Keith’s muffled snores, the low static of the tv in our room, and crickets singing. Suddenly a crunch came from behind me and I swirled around, seeing nothing around me. I concentrated on my hearing, the sound of muffled heavy breathing. Someone was trying to sneak up on me. My muscles tensed as a man came from behind a nearby tree. The smell of alcohol and sweat came from him. He stared at me with a bottle of Vodka in one hand and a burnt out cigar in the other. He smirked and began to speak, “You are one pretty thang!” I took a few steps back to keep some distance. “Why don’t we,” he paused tossing his cigar to the side. “How about you show me those nice tits,” He spitted out literally. The smell of him made me want to puke. He began to stumble forward in my direction. I let him come closer, knowing I could easily avoid him. He was obviously too drunk to fight back. Just as I was about to attack him Keith came running out of the room with a pistol in hand. Where did he get that? I asked myself hoping he wouldn’t use it. “Back away from her you bastard,” he yelled pointing the gun in our direction. “We were just getting to know each other a little better,” the drunk man replied eye balling me still. “You will go back to your room and leave us alone if you know what’s good for you,” Keith said smoothly. The drunk scrambled away down the parking lot, tripping and falling along the way. I walked up to Keith sighing, “Thanks.” I sat back down on the bed. I looked at Keith who slid back down into his chair looking at me. “I’m thinking you are not just a lawyer,” I said watching him set his handgun on the table next to him.
