Mylo Xyloto

NO MOOD THING TODAY CUZ I'VE REALIZED NO ONE CARES

I decided that this isn't going to be a real post, this is going to be a review of Mylo Xyloto, the most recent album released by Coldplay, my favorite band of all time. So, here we go~!

BUT FIRST I'm going to mention a song not on Mylo Xyloto that was exclusively released on the Every Teardrop is a Waterfall EP, Moving to Mars. Though I'll admit that I've never been crazy about when Chris Martin sings low notes (not that he's bad, but I love him for his higher stuff), they're only really in the beginning before he switches to his normal range. The piano throughout the piece is beautiful, and I'm a sucker for when a song goes from quiet to intense halfway through. What makes this song is the instrumental stuff, which conveys the mood very well. Overall, a great addition to Coldplay's stuff, and I definitely recommend!!

Now to the real album!

Mylo Xyloto
So the album title song is the first one. It's very short, only 42 seconds long, and it serves more as an intro to the next song on the album (a theme we see twice more...). It's basically all instrumental, and has quite a catchy beat. It's such a cute song that conveys a feeling of hope and happiness, and I like it.

Hurts Like Heaven
Continuing with Mylo Xyloto's theme, this is quite a peppy song. Very peppy in fact. Almost too peppy. But you know what? It's catchy enough that I can't really complain, and I love the lyrics and kinda need to dance whenever I hear it. I guess my only complaint is that it's different from Coldplay's usual, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, so it's not so much a complaint as a comment. This is one I'll be singing along to in the car a lot. It really is a fun song.

Paradise
This song, along with Every Teardrop, is the only one from this album I've heard on the radio, so you may know it already. My first impression: ...this is Coldplay? REALLY? It has a very...poppy sound to it? My mom suggested that it's because Chris Martin drags out the last word of every line a little too much, and I kinda agree. Also the whole "Para, para, paradise" thing is very poppy. But the more I listen to it, the more I like it. Again, the instrumental gets it right the most here. The violin in the beginning (and the whole song) and the guitar near the end are amazing. And listening to the lyrics legitimately makes me want to cry. So ignoring the poppiness, this really is a good song, and I have a blast singing it, so this one gets my approval. ...plus it makes me think of Mattie and that makes me cry more...

Charlie Brown
Alright. I'm discounting Every Teardrop because that was on an EP before this. This is my favorite new song on the album. Again, it's a bit peppy, but this has a more Coldplay kinda pep, like a Rainy Day or Glass of Water (from their Prospekt's March EP) kinda pep. I LOVE THESE LYRICS. Even if I haven't figured them out exactly yet... "When they smashed my heart into smithereens", "we'll be glowing in the dark"...It's so odd and adorable and I LOVE IT. I WILL learn all these words and sing this nonstop. Sure, the beginning and near the end are a LITTLE freaky...odd sounds like, due to the title, I've been relating to Snoopy's and Woodstock's voices, but I kinda like the effect they give anyway. Five stars, love it, get this song, it's awesome.

Us Against the World
Now this song is Coldplay. I love it. It's soft and slow and the lyrics are great. It makes me want to hug someone. It's just so cute and lyrical and amazing. Also, this song is Iago and Cassio's. Because I said so. ...wow, I didn't write much on this one...BUT IT'S SO GREAT. TRUST ME.

M.M.I.X.
The second of our three intro songs! It's alright, I guess...It definitely builds up to Every Teardrop... It's mostly background noise, I'll be honest...There's no real melody line behind it or anything...Random sounds...Yeah...

Every Teardrop is a Waterfall
HELL. YES. This is not just the best song on the album. This is vieing for the position of best Coldplay song EVER. The beat is catchy, the guitar is EPIC, the lyrics...oh my god, wanna cry...It's just so beautiful and catchy at the same time...I associate this one with FACE. I dunno why. It makes me so happy and sad all at the same time. Even if you don't like Coldplay, give this song a listen. It's really amazing.

Major Minus
Another very catchy song. Again, great lyrics. Not really sure what this reminds me of, but it definitely reminds me of something...I wanna say Maple Tea, but everything reminds me of Maple Tea so I dunno...Anyways, I really like the guitar in this, and the beat is fun. I especially like the line, "hear those crocodiles tickin' round the world"...Nostalgia much? NEVER SMILE AT A (is shot). But yeah, I suggest checking this one out too. I bet you you'll want to sing along.

Princess of China
Alright. Prepare yourself. I...cannot describe this song in anyway but this: WTF. WTF. COLDPLAY AND RIHANNA DON'T GO TOGETHER. YES. THEY COLLABED. WTF. The whole feel of the song is...ugh...it's much more Rihanna than Coldplay, let me say that. Chris Martin's voice doesn't go well with girls' voices anyway cuz it's so high...I don't know. Maybe I'm a Coldplay purist? Either way, I do NOT like this song. It's very not Coldplay. It's very Rihanna. And I really can't take it. Maybe if they sang in Chinese it'd be better. But they didn't. It's just whiny Rihanna stuff. No offense to anyone who likes Rihanna, but I find her stuff kinda shallow, and she brought that to Coldplay's usually really deep songs. So yeah. This was the low point of the album.

Up in Flames
And just to prove that I'm not just bashing on the Rihanna song, there's Up in Flames. I dunno...The instrumental is very simple, which is a rarity in Coldplay songs, and the lyrics are meh...The whole refrain is basically "Up in flames, up in flames, up in flames, we have slowly burned" repeat. And they try to spice it up at the end with a bit of guitar but it kinda failed. And the piano at the very end is okay but doesn't make up for the rest. Yeah, low point.

A Hopeful Transmission
Last intro song, guys! This one was fun though. It reminded me a lot of de Blob, the video game with the super fun music? It's just so upbeat and catchy! Super short though, only 33 some seconds...wish they'd made it a bit longer...Maybe I'd have more to say about it then ^^;

Don't Let It Break Your Heart
They pulled themselves up from those last two full length songs. This was upbeat and fun, but still had that deep, not so much depressing but not very happy feel, but then it was still happy, you know, "Don't let it break your heart"? I loved the instrumental. The guitar was great. It's so much fun dancing to this. It's kinda got the same feel as Charlie Brown. Maybe a bit peppier? I'd put it between Hurts Like Heaven and Charlie Brown. Whatever. It makes me smile, and that's the important thing. Recommend recommend recommend!!

Up With the Birds
I really love this song. The beginning is slow and simple, but not in a bad way like Up in Flames. And it doesn't stay simple for long. I really like the weird sounds in the transition section...they almost make me think of dragons, for no real reason at all. And then the guitar starts. It gets upbeat and happy and kinda comforting, I guess. Inspiring? That's the word that works. It's so beautiful. You really have to hear it to understand what I'm saying...It makes me feel like things will be okay, and I like that. Great song. Excellent song.

Album Overview
This is definitely different from Coldplay's last albums. But that doesn't mean it's bad. Sure, I wish they hadn't had as many intro songs, and Up in Flames was disappointing and I won't even mention Princess of China again, but the rest of the songs make up for that completely. This is a great "cheer up" album. I recommend it for old fans of Coldplay and newbies alike. It's only ten bucks on iTunes too, so I suggest picking it up! Mylo Xyloto is a great album, and I give it an 8 out of 10. ...Maybe an 8.5. It's somewhere in there XD Check it out!!
