Rafe and I run until the city is out of site, then collapse to the ground, laughing,
"We did it Rafe! And no one saw us."
Rafe lies down, but still looks around alertly.
"Do not let yourself relax yet. We are still far from home." he says.
I grin at him, "Hey, cheer up! We got enough stuff to trade to get supplies for a month! And, I even got Ayla a news paper."
He doesn't respond. I pull out some clothes from my rut-sack, and begin to change from the city outfit. I hate staying in the city clothes!
My city outfit is a workers uniform so I blend in with the warehouse employees.
I stand once I've changed, "C'mon Rafe. Let cover as much ground today as we can."
I close my bag, and drape it around my shoulders, making sure I don't jiggle the goods to much.
The flat Ayla and I share is a 3 day walk from the city. So it's pointless to go to the city to get food. Instead I go for clothes, toys, school books, things like that. Then I trade with someone for food.
------Ayla
I try to find something to tidy in the flat I share with Charlie, but I already cleaned it all. I sigh, wishing I had something to do.
Charlie and I don't own anything except what we need. A handful of outfits, a cot and blanket, some worn old schoolbooks, and a perch for
Chirp. Those are my worldly goods. Oh, and a rut-sack.
I walk over to the window and watch Chirp outside. She's circling far above the world. I sigh again, wondering what it would be like to fly.
The door opens, totally surprising me.
"Ha-ha, made ya jump!" Charlie says in a singsong voice.
I turn, and run over to her. "Charlie!" I hug her tight, almost knocking her over. Charlie pulls out of my arms, and starts to unpack and then repack her rut-sack. Out comes everything she stole, in goes survival goods in case we have to make a quick get away.
A few minutes later we hear a long loud scream. Then the alarm bells. That can only mean one thing. Guards.
"They must have followed you!" I point out to Charlie, but she shakes her head, saying,
"Rafe would have told me if he smelled something odd."
