We Meet At Last

--Jake--

Aaron paces in front of my chair, back and forth, back and forth.
"Jacob," Aaron says, his clipped voice very calm, "You are very fortunate I convinced my father to give you another chance with the Guards. After what happened." I cringe and look out the picture window in his office. The window is over looking many streets of the city. Out there I can see groups of Guards running around looking for the escaped girls. The same girls I captured a few nights ago.
"Jake," Aaron says, sighing, "Why didn't you just kill them?"
Rage fills me at the thought of killing two children.
"I couldn't Aaron!" I say, looking up at him. My angry green eyes meet his cold blue ones. "They're children! You can't expect me to kill children!" I snap, my voice growing louder with every word.
"I should be able to expect you to follow orders!" Aaron yells back, losing his callous facade.

---Charlie---

I grab Ayla's hand, and pull her behind me so she won't get lost. Chirp's flying directly above us, Rafe's in front.
"This way!" I hiss, running as fast as I can. We turn towards a maze of side streets near the factories. They're empty right now, because it's rest day. Footfalls echo behind us as we turn countless times. Thankfully, these are the factories I steal from. I know this place well.

"I know they went this way Sir!" a rough voice says. It's speaker is to close for my comfort.
"THERE!" A voice calls. We've been seen! Cripes! We duck into a tiny ally, and I pull Ayla into an overturned dumpster. I hold my finger up to my lips, and hold my breath. A gull's screech fills the air, and a gun shot rings out.
"They have to be down here!" a man's voice yells. Footsteps come down the ally, but they run right past us. I let out a breath of relief. The cat and mouse hunt has been stalled. Now we have to escape while the follow dead ends! The steps come to a sudden halt. Looks like I relaxed to early. Oh well.

"What the hell do you want?" a girls voice screams out, I feel Ayla jump next to me.
"Is it them?" Another Guard's voice yells from the other side of the lane.
"No," the first voice answers. "But it's another great catch!" His voice quiets,
"Your daddy's paying a lot of money for you, honey!" the jerk says.
"Leave her alone." Oh look, yet another guy. His voice is firm but quiet.
The Guards laugh cruelly.
"Sorry kid," one says, "But you girlfriend's wanted. Alive is optional."

I glance at Rafe, and we make a silent agreement. We climb out of the dumpster, facing the voices. A girl, about 13 or 14, and a guy, maybe 18, are surrounded by a group of 5 Guards. Before making my entry known, I glance behind me. No Guards, but a woman in her early 20s is standing there, a sword in hand. Jeez, every criminal must hang out in these parts! I meet the woman's eyes, silently telling her I'm not on the Guard's side. She nods slightly, and I grin.

Time to make myself known. I turn back around,
"I thought it was considered unfair to fight with that strong an advantage." I say, in my most cocky voice, the group turns to me, looking startled. "You know, you two could really hurt these Guards." I say, shrugging.
