To Boldly Go...

Yup, I finally got to see Star Trek today. I wasn't sure at first due to my anxieties about going out, but I was with my folks and my aunt, so there were no problems.

I really, really, really enjoyed this movie. I haven't enjoyed a Star Trek movie in... well, a long time. I think Trek was getting too bogged down in it's own continuity, so this reboot is absolutely a breath of fresh air for the franchise. With an all-new, alternative timeline to play with, they can do anything now and it won't be out of place since everything that's ever gone before is now moot. That's not to say the old Trek can be discarded, but now we can have two versions without a lot of people complaining about continuity issues (me being one of them).

I can't say anything bad about this movie at all. I think that what they've done to re-treat the classic version is very well thought out. The Spock/Uhura thing is a bit of a surprise, but it doesn't bother me. Everyone played their parts perfectly, able to fill the shoes of well-known/loved characters and yet being new at the same time. I also like how much this version differs from the perfect utopian future that Gene Rodenberry had originally envisaged. This Star Trek felt more real, more like how the future probably will end up like. I was surprised by how racist some of the Vulcans seemed - young Spock's classmates calling his mother a whore and the Science Academy panel inferring that his human heritage was somehow a handicap - but that tension lends itself to realism.

So, if you haven't seen this film yet, get out there and see it! I was content to wait til it came out on In Demand or DVD, but now I'm eternally grateful that my aunt wanted to take us out to see it. ^^
