I just got a copy of pokemon Platinum today. I got a female piplup and transfered some good low level pokemon in. They were level 1 torchic and a level 5 chikorita. When training my piplup in the Oreburgh mine, I found and captured a shiny geodude!!!! In Diamond, I found a shiny gravler, but it used self destruct.
