Jenny's Story

~*Jenny*~

I didn’t know what to do. People were crying, and I had just seen someone die. I was pulled away from someone who actually cared for once, and now, I was scared. What scared me more though, was that my memories from before I ran away were becoming clearer, and continued to come up in my thoughts lately.

“Mommy, no I didn’t do it!” I looked at her from where I was sitting. I was in the principles office again, for fighting. “They hit me, so I didn’t know what else to do!”

“Again Jennifer? What am I going to do with you? You know what is going to happen when we get home right?” She raised her eyebrows at me as she spoke in a stern tone.

“Yes.” I said quietly. She apologized to the principal, and pulled me out of the chair, and out to the car.

“Why can’t you be more like Kate?” She sighed. My older sister, she was 9, and was better then me at everything. I stayed silent, and when I got home, I didn’t say a word to Daddy, or Kate, or to Delilah, my little sister who was 5. She tried to grab my hand.

“Jenjen?” She asked. I shook her hand off and walked to my room, shut the door, and laid in my bed. Just as I did pretty much every other night I would get in trouble. And I stayed there, the whole evening and night. No supper. No bedtime stories. No hugs. No kisses. No good nights. It was just me. As usual.

“…And take this too!” I felt another punch to the face, and I punched back. If I didn’t, I would end up being hurt worse then last time. I saw the flash of a pocket knife, and I kicked it out of the girls hand. Then I ran. Back to the house. I tried slipping in quietly, but Kate made sure I was caught.

“Jennifer is back! She was fighting again!” She yelled from her spot on the couch.

“Why you little b*tch…” I spat at her.

“We do not use that language in this house young lady! And you’ve been fighting again!” My mother stood in front of me with her hands on her hips.

“So what if I have been?” I muttered.

“We got a call from the school today. You’re failing classes.” My dad said, now standing behind mom.

“I don’t have time for this…” I said as I tried walking past them. My father grabbed my wrist and yanked me back. “Ouch!”

“We don’t have time for failures in this family either! You had better straighten out missy.” He let go of me and I ran upstairs. Delilah came up with me, and we talked for a little, then she left to do homework.

Hey, where are you? I read the message from my phone.

I’m almost there, give me a second. I sent back. I walked up to a light yellow house and knocked on the door.

“It’s about time.” The boy who answered grumbled. I walked in and he shut the door. I knew what was coming next. He slapped me. “When I tell you to be somewhere at a certain time, I mean it.” He said.

“O-Ok.” I stammered.

“What was that?” He asked.

“Yes Roy.” I answered. He pulled my chin up and kissed me.

“Well, you got the test answers for me, right?” He questioned.

“Yes.” I pulled the teachers worksheet out of my bag. He grabbed it and copied down answers.

“Now that’s my girl.” He smiled. “Oh, and that one girl you talk to sometimes, Karen is it? The goody goody who is like top of our grade, I don’t want you talking to her anymore.”

“But, why? She’s really nice, and we get alo-” He cut me off by pulling my hair back.

“I said don’t talk to her anymore, got it?” He said assertively.

“Y-Yes…” I said.

“Good, and if you do, you’re precious little sister will pay.” Roy threatened.

“I understand.” I said. He let go.

“Ok. I’ll make something to eat.” He went to the kitchen, quickly made some macaroni and cheese. We ate in silence. I was getting ready to leave, when he pulled me back and kissed me again. “Love you.” He said.

“Love you too.” I nodded, and then left to go back home, where I would get another lecture about how I was failing school.

~*A few months later*~

Roy kept getting worse. Mom and Dad gave up caring. Kate was the perfect child, and Delilah was talented. I was a rotten apple who didn’t belong. No friends. I packed a few changes of clothes in a sack that night, and left Delilah a note, stained with tears.

Lilah,

I love you, the only person on Earth I do. I can’t take this anymore. I’m going away. Please don’t look for me or worry. Mom, Dad, and Kate won’t. Just please keep focused on your studies, and keep being the sweet and caring girl I know you are. I’m proud of you and I know you’ll do great things. I’m sorry I have to leave, I love you very much.

I left. Out my window, like in the movies. I stayed in the streets. Living off scraps of food, and continuing to move from town to town, until I didn’t know where I was anymore. I would get water from ponds, lakes, and rivers. But one day, I guess I drank from the wrong body of water, because the weeks following my arrival on one town, I noticed I could make the wind rustle in the trees if I thought about it, and water ripple when nothing would have disturbed it’s surface. Pebbles would shake if I stared long enough at them, and a candle would light when I did the same thing. One day, I was stealing an apple from the market, when a kind girl stopped me, and paid for it. Her name was Stella, and she let me live with her for a while. But her parent’s didn’t like me much, especially her protective dad. So, I left there, but stayed in town…because Stella was so much like my beloved Delilah, I couldn’t bare to part with her.
