Singing
I'm not sure yet, but I think Lafayette's been taking singing lessons since around 7th or 8th grade. He takes choir as an elective (which he skips a lot of the time b/c he's HORRIBLE, GO TO CLASS), and is also part of an after school singing group or something. His participation in the singing-only group is probably not as high a priority to him compared to his participation in drama club. But yeah, in terms of singing I think Lafayette has two main singing voices that he uses: one for school (musicals, choir, whatever singing club thing), and one for his personal use (?). Idk which one is his "natural voice" or what he defaults to, but he's comfortable with both of them.
School
The closest comparison I can think of for the singing voice for school is Jane Russell's voice. (This song is also the role he had for the freshman year musical, btw.) I think he uses something like an old-timey voice, and his voice is on the deeper side while still being somewhat feminine.
I also think he'd draw from Marina and the Diamonds, maybe looking at how she kind of has this exaggerated theatrical tone of voice when she sings. I guess what he takes from Marina is that he's kind of tongue-in-cheek (?) when he sings, and exaggerates emotions to the point where it's probably a little obnoxious. He really hates this kind of singing because he just considers it lukewarm and boring. (Personally, I actually don't care one way or the other about Christina Perri.)
Lafayette also likes Sia, and probably tries to emulate the excessive vibrato and glottal fry that she uses. He also loves the DRAMA of Sia's songs. THE REALITY IS... LAFAYETTE IS JUST SUCH A CORNBALL WHO LOVES TO OVERACT....
But yeah, that's the qualities I think he uses for his school singing voice.
Personal
SO THIS IS TOTALLY RANDOM, but I think Lafayette joins a band in college, so this is the voice I imagine he uses for the band. He uses it for other things, too, but idk. Also, here's more or less what he looks like as the frontperson for the band:
He gets a haircut in college. This is totally irrelvant to singing, but I think Lafayette dresses a little more provocative for the band. Look at that exposed bra. Unbelievable. (??? I drew it, so what do I care.)
But yeah, in terms of singing voice, I think the voice he uses here is most similar to the singer for Silversun Pickups--like, this kind of whispery, high-ptich-but-not-falsetto voice. (The singer for Silversun Pickups is a guy, by the way.) I'm also thinking something along the lines of the singer for The Neighbourhood for this voice, idk. Again, a lot of glottal fry. Lafayette probably uses more vibrato than either of these singers, but those singers are like the mood/tone of voice I think he'd use.
Overall, I'd say the singing voice he uses here is darker and more mysterious than his other showtune-y voice, and also a little more subdued with the emotions. And somehow, I feel like this voice is more masculine than his school singing voice, even though it's not necessarily deeper or richer in tone... Idk, I'm not making a lot of sense anymore. I also think that the notable thing about his "personal" voice is that it's a lot more consistent than the one he uses for drama productions because he's not accommodating to a role. Although, I think he still puts on some sort of character that's a little different from himself when he performs w/ the band. :m
Also, as far as his relationship with the band goes, Lafayette's not on fantastic terms with them. Again, it's because he can be pretty controlling about how he wants things done, and he's also irresponsible/reluctant about going to practice and taking orders. He's like on-and-off as their singer, or something. He's never controlling out of malice, though, he just doesn't realize people want to do things other than the way he wants to do them.
I've actually been trying to ~*~practice singing~*~ on my own b/c I wanna try singing both of these voices just as a fun thing, but I mean. I'm not a singer, so. It won't be as good as Lafayette would actually sing. But still, I'll try to record myself sometime just for fun and for comparison. B) EXPECT THAT THIS WON'T BE SUCCESSFUL....
BUT... YEP, THAT'S MY POST ON LAFAYETTE AND ACTING/SINGING! Thanks for reading this butt-long thing. B) I love blabbing about stuff, haha.
