I was doing some OC asks on tumblr recently, and I actually got a couple questions! :0 Here's the answers I did.
24. If you could meet one OC of yours, who would it be and why?
Surprisingly I don’t feel too compelled to meet any of my characters (because I’m just really bad at SOCIAL INTERACTION), but if I’d choose anyone I’d want to see Gabe just once…. in the flesh….. and tell him he’s a good bro………. and I’d also like to meet Stefan, haha. BUT IDK I’VE BEEN FEELING PASSIONATE ABOUT GABE LATELY, I think I’m feeling bad for badmouthing him all the time back in high school. (<<it was me trying to HIDE HOW MUCH I CARE FOR HIM *TSUNDERE AKIOH*)
I guess I’d want to meet them because they’ve been my OCs since like 2009 or 2010, and even though I had a lot of OCs back in high school, Stefan and Gabe are really the only ones who I still care a lot about. (I mean I still like the rest of the OFAV crew, but Stefan and Gabe have been my favorite boyos even back then HOO HOO HAH). IDK THEY’RE… IMPORTANT 2 ME…
TBH… if I actually met Gabe and had to talk to him without actually knowing anything about him, I’d probably be annoyed by him. (/I’M HORRIBLE) But I’d probably grow to like him and be his friend if I spent more time with him. (/I’M ACTUALLY JUST STEFAN BUT LESS RESPONSIBLE) Idk how me meeting Stefan would go down, I’d probably just stand there and be jealous of his suit. (???)
27. Any OCs that were inspired by a certain song?
Hmmm…. Well, music usually plays a decent role in helping me understand specific OCs better in terms of just getting a feel of their tone and personality (?), but I don’t think I’ve created an OC solely from a song. :o Usually I have a direction I want to go in for the design and personality already, and then music stuff just helps me get more specific about their character.
This isn’t an answer to the question at all, but since we’re on the topic of music I’ll mention that Lafayette’s design was basically inspired by Hitorie frontman/former vocaloid producer wowaka.
Idk if Laf and wowaka look that similar anymore b/c wowaka always changes his hair, but uh… yeah. Laf’s design is kinda just generic anime kid, anyway. wowaka’s kinda why I ended up making Laf a singer though, and Music has had a lot of influence on how I understand Laf’s personality in general. In terms of specific songs, I guess I’d go with Shampain by Marina and the Diamonds and Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings) by Silversun Pickups.
38. Which one of your OCs would be the best dancer?
Charlotte (left) and Lafayette (right) can dance. I NEVER DRAW CHARLOTTE, SORRY;;; I think Charlotte’s the only character of mine who’s actually a dancer…? That’s like. HER THING or something. She does this kind of dancing. Idk anything about dancing.
Lafayette dances for musicals, but he can’t doing anything as intricate as Charlotte can.
43. Do you have any certain type when you create your OCs? Do you tend to favour some certain traits or looks? It’s time to confess
The most obvious thing is that I mainly like making boy characters. I’VE TRIED… TO GET BETTER ABOUT CONNECTING WITH MY GIRL CHARACTERS… but I just can’t seem to connect well with any of them. ”””orz Prue’s probably the one I’m closest to out of the girls, but I still don’t draw her often or really understand her;;; I think Lafayette was supposed to help me curb this problem since he’s not a boy… like drawing him was supposed to make me more comfortable drawing not-boy characters. BUT, since he’s not a girl either he hasn’t actually helped me in that regard………. blughlbh I’M SORRY, I JUST… LIKE DRAWING AND THINKING ABOUT BOYS…!!!
Other things I tend to favor are real-world characters and fashions. I really don’t like drawing or designing fantasy-type characters;;; I think it’s just hard for me to get invested in fantasy stories because I tend to focus on character personalities (I GUESS) and fantasy universes just make it more difficult to focus on the characters;;; In terms of character dynamics, I have a habit of always pairing characters off in opposites. CLICHE, BUT… FUN… DON’T BOTHER ME.
There’s a ton of other bad habits I have in terms of creating characters, but those are the big things, haha;;;
44. Something you like about your OCs in general
Hmmm…. I think the main thing is I like my characters’ personalities and the way they interact with each other. I do admit that I need to get better about being more concrete with a lot of my characters’ personalities and motivations and stuff, but of the characters of mine who do have a fairly solid personality… I like how they’ve come out, haha. -u-/
Tbh I’m actually OBSESSED WITH MY CHARACTERS…. if it’s not already totally obvious from how much I draw them, hahaha. I almost never get as interested in fandom stuff as I do with my OCs and their stories, they’re my favorite things to think about and spend time on. :^D
48. OC who is a perfect cinnamon roll, too good for this world, too pure
I’d go with either Noland or Dmitri! :o
If you’re familiar with my characters, Noland (left) is probably the more obvious choice. His mannerisms and such are like quintessential cinnamon roll (? I guess). Noland really is a genuinely sweet and empathetic person, but I’m not really sure if he’s 100% “perfect cinnamon roll” ‘cause his morals are kind of jumbled (?? I’m being vague sorry). UH ALSO, I DON’T TALK ABOUT THIS BUT… HE’S ACTUALLY KINDA KINKY….???? I won’t really get into detail here but his libido is like the same level (?) as Gabe’s. Noland’s just way less open and proud about sex compared to Gabe. But anyway, this “appears pure and innocent but is actually just a normal adult” thing is supposed to be one of Noland’s main themes. Or something idk.
Dmitri (right) is the one that I personally consider a ~pure cinnamon roll~… but I don’t know if anyone else really does, haha;;; He comes off as kind of grumpy and rude, but he’s just awkward-shy and doesn’t know how to act around people;;; He’s actually a ~sweet boy who believes in love and kindness~ hahah. -u-/ He gets really attached to the friends he has and tries to look out for them the best he can. He’s … the secret mom friend………. ye. Idk I like Dmitri haha.
WAIT, actually I think the answer to this question is Brodney.
He’s friends with Jack and Dmitri, and the football team quarterback. He truly is the purest and most kindhearted of my characters………… I never draw him though, so I don’t really have any context for this;;; ALAS!
50. Give me the good ol’ OC talk here. Talk about anything you want
I’m gonna talk about something totally pointless: MY OCS’ MUSIC TASTES! And also just the music I listen to when I draw them. :^Y THIS IS POINTLESSLY LONG AND PROBABLY NOT INTERESTING, SORRY;;;
Lafayette: Idk what specific genre of music Laf likes, but I think in general he likes pop music with a darker tone. THAT SAID, I know that his favorite musician is Marina and the Diamonds. I’ve never really talked about it, but he’s…. obsessed… she’s his idol……….. his dream (?). For real tho, his dream is to be a musician performing music with the same feel as the stuff on her first album. Likewise, I listen to a lot of Marina when I draw Laf, haha;;; I think in general he likes musicians who try to be interesting and over the top with their singing. Other than Marina, my other go-to artists to listen to when I draw him are Sia, and the band Silversun Pickups.
UH, KIND OF A SIDE NOTE, but the dude who sings for Silversun Pickups has the most Lafayette-y sounding voice I’ve ever heard. I think he sounds the most Laf-y on the song Comeback Kid, so if you were ever wondering what I think Lafayette sounds like…. there’s that. (Idk if that’s how Laf would sing for theater stuff, tho.)
Dmitri: Originally, Dmitri was supposed to be into pop-punk, but somehow his taste in music has changed to ROMANTIC FOOL. He likes Carly Rae Jepsen, Colbie Caillat, and Taylor Swift’s old stuff (tho he still listens to her new music). I think he likes Daughter too, but… I think CRJ’s his fav… I usually just listen to CRJ’s E・MO・TION album(and side B) when I draw him, haha. I think the song Never Get To Hold You somehow gives a feel for how Dmitri is at his core. Or even Taylor Swift’s Wildest Dreams.
O. J.: Since O. J.’s a pop-rap performer, he probably likes J-pop and stuff like that. Jun (the real O. J.) is into hip-hop, probably like the more underground stuff… but I know like no hip-hop, so it’s kind of hard for me. ;u;7 I listen to Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj’s pop stuff when I’m trying to draw the more superficial O. J.. And when I’m trying to draw more serious O. J. stuff and Jun, I’ll listen to nujabes, shing02 (though I know like no songs hgghslkf), and Beck (even tho he’s not hip-hop but ???? idk). Lately, Nicki Minaj’s The Crying Game has been striking a chord with the kind of mood I want to go for with O. J. (?? idk if I’m making sense).
Noland: Noland’s kind of interesting (?? maybe) because his taste in music can be pretty different from what I actually listen to when I draw him. :Y He likes 1960′s rock and roll (idk any bands in particular b/c I don’t know this genre too well, but I’m thinking something like this song) and classic punk (The Kinks, The Ramones), which he got from listening to his Dad’s records and stuff as a kid. He likes stuff from the 70s and 80s too. He tries to hide it, but he’s a total oldies music snob, hahaha;;; As for the kind of music I listen to when I draw him, I used to listen to a lot of Daughter for him. I also listen to Dave Matthews Band when I draw him, I think the song You Never Know is pretty Noland-y. Idk. I think Dreamer by Supertramp suits him too, which is a song he’d listen to too.
Stefan: Stefan doesn’t really listen to music; I think he kinda likes classical but he’s not really knowledgeable about it or anything. I see him as a little old-fashioned, so I usually listen to stuff that reminds me of my parents when I draw him. Elton John is like my go-to for him… Fleetwood Mac, too. :Y Depending on the situation, this kind of glittery-flashy (???) 80′s music captures a good Stefan mood, too. Like 1999 by Prince, or Steppin’ Out by Joe Jackson…?? Idk if those are even in a similar genre but that’s the feel I’m thinking of.
Gabe: Gabe and my music tastes don’t really match up b/c he supposedly likes really hard rock/metal kind of stuff, and I don’t know any metal bands…. BUT!!! I think he also just likes 90′s rock and alternative, which I know a little of. For me, I think Third Eye Blind is the band that most closely captures the feel I’m trying to go for with Gabe’s personality, so I usually listen to them when I draw him. I also listen to Blink-182 and Fall Out Boy when I draw Gabe. (FOB isn’t 90′s but… whatevz….;;;) Since I’ve been listing specific songs for everyone else, I’ll just say that the song All the Souls by Third Eye Blind has been reminding me of Gabe recently. :m
