Description: Tibarn comes to the rescue during the Serenes Massacre.
I pulled my headband down around my nose to block out the smoke. It was so thick, I could barely see. I stepped over a body and charged ahead anyway. The air was echoing with screams, shouted orders, and the twang of bows.
Then I saw the shrine. Two soldiers were going in, but I ran up and knocked them down. I slipped on a streak of blood that covered the doorframe, but kept going, trying to ignore a lot of dead things on the floor....
There was a sign of life in the back corner, but more soldiers were closing in. I could hear someone whimpering in Ancient Tongue.
“No... please... stay back... don't hurt us...”
With a roar of fury, I tackled the soldiers and left them on the ground with their victims. I came up to the heron, who shrank back, trembling, at the sight of me. He was shielding another with his wing.
“St-stay away....”
“Hang on, kid,” I said, squatting down and picking up his comrade on the floor, who turned out to be King Lugrezia. “I'll get you out.”
“N-no, Father...” he said, reaching out as if to stop me. He coughed weakly. The smoke was too much for him.
“Hush, child,” I said awkwardly. Ancient Tongue wasn't my strong suit. “I... help you.” I picked him up under my other arm, stood up, and hurried out.
