Mama? Papa? Tira? Wake up! Why won’t anyone wake up? What’s happened to me? Mama, I’m scared!
Oh you poor thing. Look at you, walking around naked. Come inside, I’ll give you something to eat.
Freak! Freak! Freak! Look she has animal ears! She’s one of those weird animal people. My mommy told me to stay away from them.
Come with us. Don’t worry, we won’t hurt you. We just want to do a few tests, to figure out what happened to you.
Hurry! Get the sedatives! Quick, she’s going to get away!
“Kyaaaaaa!” I cried as I opened my easy quickly, waking up from the horrible dream. I looked down and examined my body, nothing had changed. I still looked like one of those horrible humans.
Glancing up at the huge building behind me, I trembled. They had promised not to hurt me, to change me back, and help wake up my family. They had lied. Every day they stabbed me with needles, and did thousands of other tests. It hadn’t hurt at the start, but as the days went by, the tests had begun to get more and more painful.
At least I had learned one useful thing. The sleeping animals were safe. When it had first begun, I had worried they would die, because they were unable to get any food. I had overheard the doctors speaking. “Their bodies are stuck in a suspended state, though we have no idea how it happened. They do not need food, nor water. It is as if they’re stuck in time,” had been what the man had said.
I had also learned that there were others like me, who at first had seemed to be unaffected by the virus, then had later become human. Well, not completely. Like me they had kept some of their animal features. “Here she is!” the sound of a voice made me shoot up from my hiding space. A man with a net was standing there, circling me. “Now be a good girl and come back,” he cooed, reaching out towards me.
“Never!” I growled, crouching down and getting ready for attack. He paused for a second, which was all I needed. I quickly pushed past him and ran as fast as I could.
“Get back here! Someone get her!” the man called out, having a hard time keeping up with me.
I ran around a corner, knowing that freedom was on the other side. But just as I was approaching the gate, someone grabbed me around the waist, lifting me. “I got her,” the person called out to his companion.
“Let me go! Let me go!” I struggled, hitting, scratching and biting him. None of it seemed to even faze him, and it scared me a little.
The man from earlier finally caught up. “Thanks, she’s a handful,” he l=chuckled, trying to grab me from my capture. I thought I’d try my luck, and attacked him instead. “Shit! The thing bit me!” he cried out, shaking his hand.
The one who was holding me shook his head and pulled out a needle, “You brought this on yourself you know. You should have just gone back quietly.”
“No!” I cried, resuming my struggling. “Let me go! I don’t want to go back! Mama! Mama! Someone help me!” tears stained my cheeks and I blinked in shock. Animals couldn’t cry, so I had never known what it felt like.
