Catching Up

Taiga Akashiya

After our introductions, Tsuki asked quietly, "Someone mind helping me?" She tugged at her collar and I sighed, pushing myself off of the ground.

"Can you people do nothing?" I muttered, kneeling towards the girl. The collar looked to be put on her by a scientist, and fury at the bastard humans rose in me once more.

"Those damn humans think they can do whatever they want! I'll show them!" I murmured. I grabbed the collar and using the adrenaline I had gotten from my anger, snapped it right in half. Then, I continued to chuck it into the nearby forest.

"T-thank you," Tsu stammered.

I snorted in response and turned to my seated position on the ground. "She's waking up!" Kita exclaimed, as the desert lynx's eyes opened a bit.

"Do we have any water we could use to keep her awake?" Yume suggested.

"I don't hear any streams... Please, wake up! Please!" Kita begged the lynx girl, and she finally opened her eyes all the way and rubbed at them groggily.

"Don't let her fall asleep again," I said, rubbing my temples. This was going to be harder than I thought.

"Hey guys, I think the eagle boy is waking up as well," Yume said suddenly.

He had just barely opened his eyes when I heard the pounding of footsteps. Crap. The scientists caught up to us and we weren't even close to being concealed by the forest.

Cursing, I stood up and got into a fighting stance. The others looked at me for a second before they heard the approaching humans, and smelled them, as they neared our hideout.

"What are you doing, Taiga? We have to run!" Kita told me frantically. I waved her away with a dismissive hand.

"You guys run ahead, I'll stay here and fight," I replied firmly, turning to face my enemies.

"It's too dangerous!" Kita answered, grabbing my arm.

I narrowed my eyes and shook her off of me. "Go ahead, or I'll be fighting you instead of them!" I snarled. I did not like to be touched. Especially after what the scientists had done to me.

The other animals quickly ran away, the eagle and desert lynx being half dragged. I listened for the sounds of humans and was surprised to find it silent. That wouldn't fool me for long.

The first tranquilizer needle shot through the air, zipping so fast I didn't see it coming. The human was either blind, or really stupid, because the thing wasn't even near hitting me. I heard a thump behind me and realized that they weren't aiming at me.

I turned around slowly, warily shifting my eyes from the foliage ahead of me to the slumping figure behind me.

"What the hell are you doing?!" I growled.
