Fire

Taiga Akashiya

I had just begun to relax on the soft dirt floor of the forest when I heard the sound of exasperated shouts from above. Snapping my eyes open irritably, I eyed the two fliers as they landed on the ground by Kita.

"There's a fire about a quarter of a mile off!" Lance shouted, worried. "We need to get out of here!"

"But what about the sleeping animals?" Kita asked, always putting the safety of others before herself like a fool.

"We have to get everyone out of here," the eagle boy compromised, and everyone around me nodded.

"The fire is not to far," Yume added. Of course. Just my luck to me stuck with the bunch who decided they wanted to help the sleeping animals. What were we?! Chopped liver?!

"You all better hurry if you want to save all these foxes," I growled, gesturing towards the sleeping animals.

"Aren't you going to help?" Kita inquired, her eyes widening. It seemed as though my answer would determine whether the shining of her eyes would turn into tears. With a resigned sigh, I gave an imperceptible nod.

"But if any of you die in the fire, don't hold me responsible," I snapped, moving towards the nearest animals. The foxes I gathered into my arms were surprisingly light, and as soon as I had about three I took off in the opposite direction of the fire.

The others followed soon after, with Kita taking the lead. I trailed her for what seemed like hours, and we finally arrived at another clearing. Lance flew a bit into the air to check if we were safe, and he finally gave a nod of approval.

The others and I let out a breath of relief, but I knew we weren't safe yet.

"If the humans are going so far as to burn down the forest to find us, they won't stop at that. Soon they'll be flying in the air over us, and we'll be trapped," I informed the others. I had seen plenty of flying human machines in my youth.

"Maybe we should find a way to disguise ourselves as humans?" Kita suggested.

"How would we do that?" Spike replied dubiously, simultaneously looking at his lower body.

"We'll have to find a way," I declared seriously.

"I guess you're right," Tsuki said with a nod.

"Yeah. How else are we going to find the cure?" Rylee chirped from a tree.

"Okay! I'm sure we can do this if we work together," Kiki added.

I waved away their positive remarks and beckoned Kita to stand in front of the semi-circle I and the others had formed.

"Okay... Well, here's what I was thinking..."
