What is the Watercooler?

It's a haven in the middle of a harsh, 9-to-5 world. A place where you can gather with your fellow human beings and bond over a paper cup full of cool refreshment.

All sorts of randomness is welcome here. Post pictures, videos, special Chat information, or just discuss news and current events.

Nice Catch

Props to Sangome mentioning it in chat

Titulus Insertus

As I was searching through the Merriam Webster's online dictionary (no need to ask why, just know that I was), I come across a little something that made me laugh and will hopefully amuse you folks as well.

facepalm
(verb) : to slap or cover one's face with one's hand or hands to express frustration, disapproval, or embarrassment

EDIT: Also, I checked. The word "headdesk" is there too. Commence uproarious laughter.

Hired!

Normally we don't post the skits from recent episodes of MST3K, but this one has taken a special little place in the heart of the group. The short preceding the movie was Hired! Part 1, which in turn, inspired the host segment.

Yes Trip, this one's for you.

Anime Club - Genshiken ep9-11 / Kare Kano ep4-5

I totally forgot to post this earlier in the week, but I get the feeling that it doesn't matter so long as the password is available by the time the chat starts. Maybe I'll make an Anime Club world so I could just update the intro with new passwords instead of spamming posts here.

Next Meeting: September 5, 2009, at 10:00 PM Eastern (7:00 PM Pacific)
Next Episodes: Genshiken ep9-11 / Kare Kano ep4-5

About the Anime Club
The Anime Club is a weekly room in theOtaku's community chat where we meet to have fun laughing, crying, heckling, and spazzing together while watching a few episodes of anime. Rather than watching mainstream shows, however, we pick out good, yet lesser-known anime as an opportunity for people to enjoy new shows. Streaming links are usually provided for those without a copy of the anime.

Current Anime
Genshiken is a 15 episode (12 + 3 OAV) comedy/slice of life about The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, aka Genshiken. That being the anime/manga/gaming club with an overly extravagant name that college freshman Sasahara Kanji happens to join. There he meets a wide variety of fellow otaku amongst whom his fandom and fetishes mature.

Kare Kano (aka His and Her Circumstances) is a 26 episode romantic comedy about Miyazawa Yukino (Enomoto Atsuko), a vain high school girl who acts like miss perfect to garner praise and attention, and Arima Souichirou (Suzuki Chihiro), her classmate who really is mister perfect. Through rivalry, manipulation, and curiosity the two grow closer and experience the drama of high school romance together.

Movie Sign #56 - Bride of the Monster

External Image

What is Movie Sign?
Every Sunday night, we nestle down in Chat and watch an episode of the cult TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K for short) while spamming up the Chat box. Don't worry - we use episodes available on streaming sites so that we can all watch simultaneously.

What's MST3K?
A comedy show that ran from 1988-1999, it's like watching a movie with running commentary. Joel Robinson or Mike Nelson, along with 'bots Tom Servo and Crow, are forced to watch terrible films as part of a mad scientist's bid for world domination. To keep their (and our) sanity, they talk back to the movies and riff on them. A more detailed explanation can be found up at the SoL.

Next Episode
There's no Frankenstein, but there is Bela Lugosi, who stars as mad scientist Eric Vornoff. Out to rule the world? You betcha, and Vornoff is creating an army of atomically mutated supermen to do his bidding. Now, you might think a movie with Bela Lugosi won't be so bad, but this time you'd be very sadly mistaken, as this film is yet another gem from Ed Wood, and also stars the beloved Tor Johnson as Vornoff's assistant, Lobo. Before the flick is the short Hired! Part 1, and it's about time considering we saw Part 2 way back when we watched Manos.

Host Segment Highlights
Do robots dream of electric sheep? Not Crow, who dreams of fistfuls of money, almond bark rain, and Tom in a rather... sexual way. Frank's been a bad boy, so he deserves a time-out in the Tough Love Seat, while Joel and the Bots gives some topical humor (for the early 90s). Rogers and Hammerstein move over, the SoL crew perform the greatest musical this side of Broadway. If octopus doesn't scare you then see if you can face the terror of an olive loaf monster! Willy the Waffle (cousin of Coily the Spring Sprite) is here to defend advertising! And when the day is done and the nightmare is over, can Cambot really edit the movie better than Ed Wood? We should all pray that he does.

Come join us! We don't bite, promise. Movie starts at 8pm EST/5pm PST, room opens at the :30 beforehand.

The password for the room is: candystriper. Be prepped for the night and find the movie here.

Movie Sign swings on into September with...

9/13 - Episode 602 - Invasion USA (w/short "A Date With Your Family")
9/20 - Episode 207 - Wild Rebels
9/27 - Episode 702 - The Brute Man (w/short "The Chicken of Tomorrow")
