It's a haven in the middle of a harsh, 9-to-5 world. A place where you can gather with your fellow human beings and bond over a paper cup full of cool refreshment.
All sorts of randomness is welcome here. Post pictures, videos, special Chat information, or just discuss news and current events.
Join us - TimeChaser, Katana, and Shinmaru - for the next Movie Sign on theOtaku Community Chat.
What is Movie Sign?
Each week, we watch an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 while having a fun, spammy chat about it. We use episodes available on You Tube so everyone can watch them simultaneously.
What is MST3K?
It's a comedy show about a man and his robots being forced to watch bad movies as part of a mad scientist's experiment. The man, Joel Robinson or Mike Nelson, and the robots Tom Servo and Crow, watch real B-movies and riff on them, that is make jokes and talk back to the films.
Next Episode
It's a cold day in hell for Joel, Tom and Crow in Episode 422 - The Day the Earth Froze. This movie is a joint Finnish/Russian production based on a folk tale in the Kalevala. Hard working Lemminkäinen falls in love with the beautiful Annikki. Elsewhere, the witch Louhi desires a Sampo, but only Annikki's brother Ilmarinen has the skill to forge one, so Louhi kidnaps Annikki to lure her brother and fiance into a trap. What is a Sampo? Your guess is as good as Joel's and the Bots'.
Preceeding the movie is the short Here Comes the Circus, a look at the Clyde Beatty circus show.
Here's a quick clip from the movie...
So be there next Sunday night and join in the fun! Movie starts at 8 PM EST, chat opens at 7:30.
Meet your fellow otaku and enjoy some anime at the weekly Anime Club meetings in the Community Chat.
What's the Anime Club?
The Anime Club is a weekly chat room in theOtaku's community chat where we meet to have fun laughing, crying, heckling, and spazzing together while watching a few episodes of anime. The anime will most likely be available on streaming sites since we're mainly going to stick to unlicensed shows. I hope the Anime Club will be a good opportunity for people to find new series and genres that they enjoy, and for series to gather support for if/when they're licensed.
What are you watching?
We're currently watching Minami-ke, a thirteen episode comedy/slice of life series. It features weird dialogue- and slapstick-based humor that fans of shows such as Azumanga Daioh, Lucky Star, or Ouran High School Host Club should enjoy.
When are the next episodes?
We will be watching Minami-ke episodes 10 - 13 on Saturday, September 20, at 10:00 PM Eastern Time (7:00 PM Pacific). The chat room will open about a half hour early, around 9:30 PM Eastern. Given four episode at twenty-four minutes each, they'll last about an hour and forty minutes. I hope to see you there!
The password for the chat room will be: hamguy
What anime is next?
Good question! If you have any suggestions for what we should watch next, leave a comment. Some current ideas are Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight!, Hidamari Sketch, Tales of Symphonia, and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. We'll most likely decide during the chat this Saturday so be sure to drop in and let us know what you'd like to see.
I discovered this gem while browsing the Yahoo news ticker. According to a national survey of 1,102 people ages 12-17:
-97% played video games. Boys were at 99% and girls at 94%.
-There was no difference across racial and ethnic groups.
-50% of those surveyed say they had played a game the previous day.
-80% play at least five genres of games.
Nice to see something of this sort, rather than the typical drivel of how games are hurting social interactions and causing obesity...I was more surprised at how nearly everyone plays games, though. Grant it, it's a survey of a small number of people, but it's a survey nonetheless.
Again, boredom has struck and I've become curious as to what all you fellow otaku think. (Not to mention something like this happened to me recently.)
I'm sure this subject is something we all share in common. Encounters with parents and anime.
Sometimes they're understanding and even share in the passion; maybe they were the ones to introduce you to it!
Or, perhaps more likely, they don't really understand it but let you enjoy it anyway... or maybe the exact opposite.
What kind of experiences have you had in regards to your parents and anime? Did you try to get them to watch an anime with you, but it ended in disaster? Or (like me) do you insist that they listen to some song(s) from an anime?
Any and all tales are welcome! Tales of joy and triumph, and stories of hilarious mishaps.
