What is the Watercooler?

It's a haven in the middle of a harsh, 9-to-5 world. A place where you can gather with your fellow human beings and bond over a paper cup full of cool refreshment.

All sorts of randomness is welcome here. Post pictures, videos, special Chat information, or just discuss news and current events.

On users of the internets

Inspired by a conversation I'm currently having with Timber...

The internet. It's a great tool for...well, just about everything you can imagine. You want chicken Gundams? You want an antique sandwich? You want obscure foreign videos? DONE.

However, a lot of us are still living at home, which means parents are on the watch for things we do and say. While some are less strict than others, there seems to be this general paranoia of the internet and people you interact with on it.

Stories of MySpace rapings and internet terrorists lurk around Dateline and 60 Minutes like crazy, so much so that some parents are led to believe that everyone on the i-net is out to get their child.

My question is two-fold:
1.) How do/did your parents react to you and online buddies/etc.? Or did you ever tell them? XD
2.) Tips for dealing with such things.

My parents are quite lenient on what I do online. They don't stalk me and my IMs or ask me about my activity. When I told them about the myOtaku meet-up at ACen, I was essentially told to just stay with my friend and be safe. [And anyways, given that conventions are huuuuge public places, you're really not going to be in much danger...] But I know that a lot of folks don't have this luxury.

So yeah. My magatama's baking. Gotta go and check it.
