It's a haven in the middle of a harsh, 9-to-5 world. A place where you can gather with your fellow human beings and bond over a paper cup full of cool refreshment.
All sorts of randomness is welcome here. Post pictures, videos, special Chat information, or just discuss news and current events.
I have been more or less absent from the intertubes for the past month. Why? Well, other than preparing to move to Vietnam in January, I've been undertaking a rather large project for my Japanese 355 class.
As I've mentioned before, I have ocular albinism (actually, it's oculocanteous albinism, if you want to split hairs). It's somewhat rare, and most often affects males more than females, and people of African or Japanese descent. I have Type 2, but Type 4 OB ONLY affects Japanese guys.
Yet, there are all of 2 websites in Japanese covering OA and OB. I'm not even making this up. And one of them is Wikipedia. What exists in Japanese is highly technical, and no real explanation of how to make one's life easier.
For my Japanese final, I'm setting the groundwork for a bilingual OA/OB website, that discusses the conditions in detail, as well as things one can do to make their lives easier (glasses with reflective covering, reverse-color monitors, etc.).
I'm doing all of the texts, working on logos, and so forth, but I cannot code for my life. This is not an immediate request, but if you or anyone you know would be interested in helping me actually set up the site... it would be greatly appreciated. Anyone who can help in any way would be a godsend.
If it doesn't go off the ground, I'll be disappointed, sure, but it is not something that is going to change my grade (just a portion of the technical aspect of OA was translated for a grade in the class) but I want to continue this well past the classroom.
Much appreciated,
division-ten
PS: I've started to learn coding by myself, using Yahoo as a dummy page and template. Unfortunately, I can;'t make the site recognize itself as being Japanese, one has to change the settings on their computer manually to see it. Anyone know how to fix this?
Meet your fellow otaku and enjoy some anime at the weekly Anime Club meetings in the Community Chat.
What's the Anime Club?
The Anime Club is a weekly chat room in theOtaku's community chat where we meet to have fun laughing, crying, heckling, and spazzing together while watching a few episodes of anime. The anime will most likely be available on streaming sites since we're mainly going to stick to unlicensed shows. I hope the Anime Club will be a good opportunity for people to find new series and genres that they enjoy, and for series to gather support for if/when they're licensed.
What are you watching?
We're trying a new format where we'll watch episodes from two different shows each night. I hope people will stick around for both but, if one of the series just isn't your thing, feel free to only drop in for the other.
The first show is Library War, a 12 episode action/comedy series. So far it seems similar to Full Metal Panic! but with less mecha and more books. Click here to watch its opening.
The second show is Spice and Wolf, a 13 episode fantasy/drama series. It's somewhat slow-paced and doesn't have much action, instead focusing on the characters' interweaving relationships and ways of getting by in life. Click here to watch its opening.
When are the next episodes?
We will be watching Library War ep7-8 / Spice and Wolf ep7-9 on Saturday, December 13, at 10:00 PM Eastern Time (7:00 PM Pacific). (We didn't get to Spice and Wolf ep7 last week so we'll be watching it this week instead.) The chat room will open a half hour early, around 9:30 PM Eastern, and the episodes will last about an hour and forty minutes altogether. We hope to see you there!

Olive stirring? Crack pairings? Packers won the Super Bowl?! It must be Movie Sign!
What's Movie Sign?
Every week, we nestle down in Chat and watch an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K for short) while spamming up the Chat box. We use episodes available on You Tube so that we can all watch simultaneously.
What's MST3K?
It's a comedy show about a man and his robots, stranded in space and forced to watch some of the worst movies ever made as part of a mad scientist's bid for world domination. To keep their (and our) sanity, Joel Robinson or Mike Nelson, along with 'bots Tom Servo and Crow, talk back to the films and riff on them.
Next Episode
Strap on your swords for Episode 301 - Cave Dwellers. When the wise Akronas discovers the Geometric Nucleus, a source of unimaginable and dangerous power, he sends his daughter Mila to find the legendary warrior, Ator. Together with Ator's companion Thong, the trio face a series of obstacles on their journey to save Akronas from the evil Zor.
A true classic from the MST vaults, this cheesy barbarian movie provides some of the best riffs in the history of the series. This is one Movie Sign you don't want to miss.
Host Segment Highlights
The boys dress up and imitate the movie's opening credits; Joel explains how you can make ordinary props seem fancy by giving them exaggerated names; Joel demonstrates the art of foley (sound effects).
