Since 1999, the independent audio production company Big Finish has produced officially licensed Doctor Who audio dramas featuring Doctors 5-8, accompanied by classic and original companions. But for a long time, they and fans have desired to bring Tom Baker, the actor who portrayed the iconic Fourth Doctor, into the studio.
And now, it's finally going to happen.
After reprising the role for two audio series from BBC Audio, Tom has finally signed on to Big Finish, and its not just for a one-off. Set to be recorded this summer with a projected early 2012 release date, there will be two seasons of six and seven stories each, as well as a special box set of five "Lost Stories".
Joining Tom will be Louise Jameson, returning to her role as the savage warrior woman Leela, and Mary Tamm, the first actress to play the Doctor's Time Lady companion Romana.
The titles for the opening 2-part story of the new season have been revealed: "The Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon". Doctor Who Magazine also has titles for the next five episodes, but will wait to reveal them in the next issue.
Before he returns for new adventures as the Doctor next month, Matt Smith will be starring in the one-off BBC Two drama Christopher and His Kind, chronicling the early years of celebrated British author Christopher Isherwood. It will be aired on March 19.
The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine has announced the likely airdate for Season 6 as Easter Weekend, Saturday April 23, with Episode 2 potentially airing as early as April 24, though so far this is only a rumor.
UPDATE:
While BBC One has yet to confirm this news, BBC America have officially announced the new season will begin airing on April 23:
Doctor Who is coming to America in a spectacular two-part season premiere on BBC AMERICA. Part One premieres Saturday, April 23 at 9/8c. The mysterious time traveler, the Doctor (Matt Smith), and his companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill), find themselves on a secret summons that takes them on an adventure from the desert in Utah - right to the Oval Office in 1969.
