SomeGuy's Workshop: Session Eighteen

In light of the recently announced Halloween Writer's Jam, I thought it'd be good make one basic workshop for all the writers here to get their bearings...

Getting Ready For The Jam:

First thing's first, in case anyone missed it the first time around, this site has pretty straight-forward guidelines for Fan Word submissions. The point-form version of it for our purposes, though:

  • Make sure it an actual Fan Word, not just a blog or something.
  • Written works need to be self-contained; no single chapters.
  • Good spelling, punctuation and grammar is a MUST.
  • Keep the stories PG-13; hide the naughty bits, V-chip the excessive swearing.
  • Put full line spaces between the paragraphs; indenting doesn't work for web posts the way it does in Word.

Seem simple enough? Good.

I'm Stuck On An Idea!

We're a collective of writers here. If you have an idea that just needs a little more fleshing out, we'd all be happy to chime in with some ideas if you're looking for them.

In particular, NightBeck's Writing Prompts might be a good place to look for something that might trigger a good idea. This week, she's already dropped some holiday-themed prompts that might get some new ideas moving.

As for genre-writing, Becky once also did a workshop on horror writing a few months back. I know I once got some good help out of that one, so I can definitely recommend it.

Can Anyone Look Over My Stuff First?

I know some people are sometimes really intimidated by the whole "make sure your grammar is PERFECT!" thing.

But that's what Beta Readers are for! The main introduction page of this World has a beautiful list of volunteers who are all more than happy to help you guys out with your works in progress if you'd like 'em. They're good people. Give 'em a go.

I Still Have More Questions!
