Ontario Celebrates First Year of iGaming Operations

This week is an important one for Ontario’s gambling industry, as the province marked its first-year anniversary of the introduction of its online gambling sector. In just 12 months, the first-of-its-kind market in the country handled CA$35.6 billion in wagers and brought CA$1.4 billion in revenue, making it one of the top iGaming jurisdictions on the continent.

The province’s online sector for gambling and sports betting was the first of this nature in Canada and is operated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and iGaming Ontario. Since its debut on April 4, 2022, the sector recorded more than 1.6 million active users on websites run by more than 40 operators who have been licensed by iGO to work legally in the province.

* First Year in Numbers

For its first calendar year of operations, Ontario’s iGaming sector witnessed around CA$35.6 billion in total placed wagers, which brought in approximately CA$1.4 billion in total gaming revenue. And according to numbers from the regulator, active player accounts spend around CA$70 every month on iGaming via one of the many options.

Also, as found by an Ipsos survey from March 2023 and recently published by AGCO, approximately 85% of the participants who gambled online in the province over the last three months have done so on regulated sites. The most preferred sport to bet on for the first year was basketball with 28% of the bets, followed by soccer with 15% football at 14% and hockey at 9%.

In addition to that, the new survey found that in terms of the online casino portion of the market, almost half of all gamblers preferred slots, as they accounted for 48% of the iCasino volume. Meanwhile, nearly a third of the casino play or 32% was captured by table games with a live dealer. Then the remainder or the rest 19% went to computer-based table games.

Commenting on the anniversary, Attorney General Doug Downey, said the iGaming market has successfully replaced the pre-existing unregulated one and made the jurisdiction a leader in the industry. He added that government is pleased with the strong, responsible, and competitive model. He also thanked iGO’s executives for their tremendous effort and for making it a reality.

* Coolbet’s Exit

However, recently the news about Coolbet exiting the local iGaming market has been a cause of concern for some. The operator said that its departure was due to putting the maximizing of profitability first as well as the investment capital and resources into only the highest return regions. It said that it did not project near-term profitability in the market.

Meanwhile, shortly after the news about the shutdown, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario reminded that operators who exit the market should also abide by the departure regulations. The regulator said the province’s iGaming standards must be met for all instances where the relationship between the operator and a player is terminated.

New Yorkers Bet Over US$1.7B on Sports in March 2023

After the dropdown in New York’s mobile sports betting in February 2023, March Madness revitalized the market and provided a busy month for wagering. According to the New York State Gaming Commission, in March local sports punters placed over US$1.7 billion in wagers, which was just US$3 million short of the highest monthly volume for the local sector.

Mobile sports betting is legal in New York State since January 8, 2022, when the state officially commenced operations of its legal market. A total of nine operators are allowed to offer and accept wagers on various sporting events from all around the world. The nine apps are FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars Sportsbook, BetMGM, BetRivers, WynnBET, Resorts World Bet, and Bally Bet.

* March Was a Busy Month for Operators

As mentioned, March Madness provided a much-need revitalization of the market, which saw volume dry up after the Super Bowl in February. According to the latest numbers, in March 2023, local bettors placed US$1,785,952,977 in total wagering handle throughout the month. This was only US$3 million short of the highest monthly volume of US$1,788,991,455 in January 2023.

It should be also mentioned that it has become a common occurrence for the Empire State market to outperform its previous all-time high on the monthly scale. Mobile sports betting has now exceeded US$1 billion in wagering volume for the 13th time in 15 months. It was also the eighth instance that the state clocked US$1.5 billion, with five of them coming in the last six months.

For the month of March, the nine sportsbooks brought in US$162.8 million in gross gaming revenue, which taxed 51% transformed into US$83 million in tax revenue. Meanwhile, FanDuel was the top-performing operator for the month with just over US$740 million in handled wagers, which was a new record for the industry for a sportsbook with the highest betting total for a single month.

But the sportsbook also had its second-best month in terms of gross gaming revenue with almost US$80 million. In the meantime, DraftKings was again the second-best app with handled bets of around US$590 million and US$52 million in revenue. Caesars Sportsbook was third with U$237 million and just over US$15 million in gross gaming revenue for March.

However, the latest weekly mobile sports betting volume picture paints a different story. On Thursday, the NYSGC issued its latest weekly report on the market which applied to the week ending on April 2, 2023. For the said week, the nine apps recorded a betting handle of just US$339.9 million. Again, lower than the prior week’s total numbers.

* Protecting Local Bettors

But with the major success of the state’s online sports wagering market, some lawmakers remain cautious about its potential impact on locals. In January, democrats Luis R. Sepúlveda and Leroy Comrie introduced Bill S1550, which if passed, would regulate all gambling ads in the state coming with warnings about the possible negative effects of online betting.

Sudbury Collects Quarterly Gaming Allocation from OLG

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is once again sending out its quarterly casino payments to provincial host communities. Greater Sudbury is once again on the receiving end, as the municipality is the home to Gateway Casinos Sudbury. For the quarter ending on March 31, 2023, the city got a payment of almost CA$445,000.

By means of the Municipal Contribution Agreement, the government of Ontario is required to allocate a portion of its casino profits to the localities that host its land-based gambling sites. The payment is determined using a standardized formula that is uniformly applied across all provincial gaming facilities and features a gradual scheme of gaming income for each location.

* Cashing in on Casino Revenue

Just last week, the Crown agency provided its latest quarterly payment to Sudbury which applies to the period of January 1, 2023, through March 31, 2023, for hosting Gateway Casino Sudbury. For Q4, the allocation was Ca$444,925, thus putting the total sum for the whole of OLG’s 2022-23 fiscal year to CA$1,929,529. Since the launch of the venue, the amount nears CA$48 million.

Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy expressed that the payments made through the Municipal Contribution Agreement of OLG are contributing towards the development of robust communities that offer a superior standard of living for individuals and families. The generated revenues aid in backing regional initiatives and vital public facilities, thus playing a significant role in enhancing the living conditions of the host communities.

In addition to Sudbury and other Ontario municipalities, Wasaga Beach has also been accredited a Q4 payment for hosting the recently launched Playtime Casino Wasaga Beach. For the last quarter of FY, the property brought CA$$286,000 in tax-gaming revenue to the town. Its first payment for hosting the casino was around CA$152,000 and was awarded in January 2023.

Under the current agreement, the town is set to receive 5.25% of the first CA$65 million of slot revenue and 3% of the next CA$135 million from slot operations. Now, the town’s council is tasked with finding where to invest it. A draft was submitted of how to spend the casino revenue to the previous council. Meanwhile, revenue is added to the casino’s reserve account

Sandra Watts, the town’s director of communications and intergovernmental relations shared that a second draft of the policy should be shown to the council at a meeting on May 25, 2023. She further mentioned that the draft will review feedback from councillors, as well as the survey from last fall, which questioned locals on how the money should be spent.

* Niagara Falls Collects a Cheque

In the meantime, OLG’s round of payments does not end here, as Niagara Falls has also received its fair share for hosting two of the country’s most premium casinos. The city bagged a Q4 payment of CA$3.93 million for being host to the Crown corporation’s Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara.

Bae Ji-hwan, who went on a business trip in 3 days, succeeded in scoring as a pinch runner..."M

Pittsburgh Pirates' Bae Ji-hwan (25) showed off his fast feet as a pinch runner.

Bae Ji-hwan played as a pinch-runner against the Seattle Mariners at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on the 17th (Korea Standard Time).

Seattle's leadoff hitter Jorge Polanco advanced to second base with a walk and a foil in the top of the fourth inning. Luke Reilly gave his team the first run with a two-run homer.

Pittsburgh recovered a point in the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk by Brian Reynolds, a walk by O'Neill Crews, and an RBI double by Isaiah Kiner and Palepa. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Yasmani Grandal's solo homer, Michael A. Taylor's hit, stolen base, and a timely RBI single by Andrew McCutchen.

With one out in the seventh inning, the Pittsburgh Pirates where Taylor walked gained a chance with one out and runners on the first and third bases thanks to McCutchen's hit. Bae Ji-hwan was substituted as a pinch runner in place of McCutchen. Reynolds was struck out, but Cruz hit a two-run double. Bae scored a run as he came home with Taylor. Pittsburgh allowed Polanco to hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning, but won the game 5-3.

Bae Ji-hwan, who was silent with no hits in three at-bats against San Diego on the 14th, took two days off and returned as a pinch runner. He did not have a chance to bat, but he scored and recorded a batting average of 240-ri (11 hits in 54 times at bat) with four RBIs, 11 runs and five steals in 22 games this season.

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skins allowed three hits (one homer) with four walks, six strikeouts and two runs scored in six innings. He has continued his amazing debut season this season, with seven wins, two losses and an earned run average of 2.30 in 16 games (98 innings). He allowed five four pitches, which had difficulty controlling the ball, but overcame the crisis by throwing fastballs with a maximum speed of 99.4 miles (160.0 kilometers) per hour.

Major League Baseball's official media MLB.com said, "The Pirates struggled against Seattle starter Logan Gilbert, but it brought the atmosphere from the beginning of the game. It was because he had problems with his location, but he showed his crisis management ability."

"It wasn't like I didn't know how I was doing. I just kind of lost my touch. I don't know how it looked, but I knew I was going to find the sense of pitching soon. Basically, to get back to control, I had to keep throwing." Manager Derek Shelton, who showed faith in Skins until the end, said, "I think we're all really into him. And he got off to a start that everybody thought was Armageddon when his pitching form faltered and he gave up a walk. He's a Major League Baseball pitcher who can handle situations like that, and I saw how he solves problems today. He still created a chance for us to win. I want to compliment him on that point."
