"It's forbiden and you know it. Who knows what Kanayuki will do!" Shino's mother said frantically. This Kanayuki fellow must be a really scary guy for all of the relatives to be so fearful of him and what he will do if one is late or doesn't answer his phone calls.
Shino took her hands and forced her to look him in the eyes. "When was the last time I asked you for anything? When was the last time you saw me really smile? I'll take Kanayuki's anger. I could care less. Just...please," He looked at me. "I want them to stay here." I felt so badly putting him in this kind of a position. If I had known, I wouldn't have come along. Kai and I could have found some other place to stay. I didn't want to be putting anyone out of their way.
His Mom sighed, "Fine. Maybe I can pull a few strings and get the family to hire her as a house maid. Then she'll have a little protection from Kanayuki."
Shino nodded and kissed her hands. "Thanks mom." Then he stood up and headed for the door. "I'll be back for my painting. Why don't you show them around?" he closed the door behind him, leaving Kai and me with his mother.
I turned to her, "Look, I am really sorry about this. If I had known it was going to be this troublesome, I would have just gone to a shelter." My hand was on Kai's shoulder, and I was massaging it gently.
"Nonsense. That boy needs a good place to live, you do, too. A shelter is no place to be growing up," Shino's mom said. "It will be tricky, but in order to protect the two of you, I'm going to have to ask that you work here as a maid. That way Kanayuki can't say we are just harboring outsiders."
I nodded in understanding. I could use the money anyway, and it would feel nice to be doing something for someone else while I was staying in their home. "Yes, of course. Kai can tag along and help me whenever possible."
Shino's mom smiled. "Why don't I show you the house and your new rooms. I'm afraid you two will have to bunk together."
"I'd prefer it that way, actually," I agreed.
"Good. Once you get to see your room, why don't you head back and grab what you can and start moving in, and I'll make those phone calls for you."
