The Earthers

  • Juzo Okita (Abraham Avatar): Commanding Officer of the 225, the EDF Command Cruiser leading the battle against the Gamilusians on Pluto (where Okita becomes ill from radiation), and later Commanding Officer of the Yamato. During the ship's voyage, Okita's illness gets worse and right after the end of the voyage itself, scientists freeze him in cryogenic stasis and leave the rest of the Yamato crew to think the captain's dead. Then during the early portion of the Earth Vs. Dinguil War, they unfreeze Okita to give him the cure for his illness from radiation, thus allowig him to return to command of the Yamato. However in the FSBY version of the Yamato Vs. White Comet Empire story, it is suggested that Okita actaully dies from his illness after the Yamato's return to Earth from its first voyage. Throughout the entire Yamato saga, Okita is a father figure to both Susumu Kodai and Mamoru Kodai. Seen in SBY, FSBY (as a ghost), SBY III (mirage cameo), and FY.
  • Susumu Kodai (Derek Wildstar): The Yamato's Combat Chief and pilot of the Cosmo Zero. During Earth's wars against both the White Comet Empire and the Black Nebula Empire, Susumu Kodai serves as the Yamato's Deputy Captain. Finally, he becomes the ship's offical Commanding Officer during the war between the Gamilus-Galman Empire and the Bolar Federation, only to later resign from command during the early portion of the Earth Vs. Dinguil War after feeling responsible for the deaths of many crewmen. Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Mamoru Kodai (Alex Wildstar): Susumu Kodai's brother. Commanding officer of the Yukikaze (EDF Missile Ship 17). Seen in SBY, SBY: NV, BFY, and SBY III (mirage cameo).
  • Yuki Mori (Nova Forrester): The Yamato's Living Arrangements Chief and Main Bridge Radar Operator. Love interest of Susumu Kodai. Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Daisuke Shima (Mark Venture): The Yamato's Chief Navigator and Helmsman. One of Susumu Kodai's best friends. Secretly is in love with Yuki Mori. Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Jiro Shima (Jordy Venture): Brother of Daisuke Shima. Seen in SBY (T.V. series cut only), SBY 2, and FY.
  • Shiro Sanada (Sandor): Yhe Yamato's Chief Science Officer and cyborg crewmember. One of Susumu Kodai's best friends as well as his source of advice. He's also an old friend of Mamoru Kodai. During the Gamilus-Galman Vs. Bolar War, he and Daisuke Shima become Executive Officers of the Yamato. Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Sakezo Sado (Dr. Sane): The Yamato's surgeon. Also a comic relief in the anime multiseries. Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Mi-Kun (Mimi): Sakezo Sado's cat and the Yamato crew's mascot. Seen in SBY (T.V. series cut only), FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY, and SBY III.
  • Analyzer (IQ-9): Sakezo Sado's robot assistant. Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Hikozaemon Tokugawa (Orion, Sr.): The Yamato's Chief Engineer during its first trip to Iscandar and during Earth's fight against the White Comet Empire. Seen in SBY, FSBY, and SBY 2.
  • Sukeharu Yabu (Sparks): Hikozaemon Tokugawa's Assistant Engineer during the Yamato's first Iscandar voyage. Seen in SBY.
  • Yoshikazu "Giichi" Aihara (Homer Glitchman): The Yamato's Chief Communications Officer. Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Yasuo Nanbu (Dash): Susumu Kodai's 2nd-hand man in the Yamato's Combat Department. Serves as the ship's Artillery Specialist. In some English subs of the Anime multiseries, this character's family name reads "Nambu". Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Kenjiro Ohta (Eager): Daisuke Shima's 2nd-hand man in the Yamato's Navigation Department. Also the ship's main operator for the wave motion sensor and video system. Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Saburo Kato (Peter Conroy): Leads the Yamato's Black Tiger squadron during the Yamato's first Iscandar voyage and the ship's 1st Cosmo Tiger squadron during Earth's fight against the White Comet Empire. Seen in SBY, FSBY, and SBY 2.
  • Akira Yamamoto (Jefferson Davis Hardy): One of the Yamato's Black Tiger/Cosmo Tiger pilots during the Yamato's first Iscandar voyage and Earth's fight against the White Comet Empire. Seen in SBY, FSBY, and SBY 2.
  • Heikuro Todo (Earth Commander Charle's Singleton): Head of the Earth Defense Forse, the operating authority for the Yamato. Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY; NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Kaoru Shintani (Mel "Slops" Mulligan): The Yamato's Chief Cook. Seen in SBY (T.V. series cut only).
  • Ryu Hijikata (Draco Gideon): In FSBY, he's the Commander of the Yanagi (the EDF Patrol Cruiser leading the EDF Outer Defense Fleet) and later the Yamato's Commander after the Patrol Cruiser's destruction, but in SBY 2, he's the EDF Flagship Andromeda's Commanding Officer.
  • Hajime Saito (Knox): Leader of the Sapce Marines aboard the Yamato during the Earth's fight against the White Comet Empire. Seen in FSBY and SBY 2.
  • Hyōgo Tōdō (Corporal Kane): 2nd-in-command of the Space Marines aboard the Yamato during Earth's fight against the White Comet Empire. Seen in FSBY and SBY 2.
  • Jirō Tsurumi: Leads the Yamato's Cosmo Tiger squadron. Seen in FSBY.
  • Yasuhiko Yamada (William Peale): The Yamato's interrogator. Sen in SBY 2.
  • Hyota Arakome (Royster): Nerdy newbie in the Yamato's Engineering and Sciences departments during Earth's fight against the White Comet Empire. Seen in SBY 2.
  • Tasuke Tokugawa (Orion, Jr.): Sho Yamazaki's Assitant Engineer aboard the Yamato. Seen in SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III and FY.
  • Sho Yamazaki: The Yamato's Chief Engineer after the the fight between Earth and the White Comet Empire. Seen in SBY: NV, BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Shigeru Sakamoto: An ace Cosmo Tiger pilot aboard the Yamato. Seen in SBY: NV.
  • Tetsu Kitano: A Trainee Navigator onboard the Yamato. Seen in SBY: NV.
  • Keisuke Yamanami: The Yamato's Commanding Officer during the Yamato's 2nd fight agianst the Black Nebula Empire. Seen in BFY.
  • Shiro Kato: One of the Yamato's Cosmo Tiger pilots. Look-alike brother of Saburo Kato. Seen in BFY, SBY III, and FY.
  • Sasha Kodai/Sasha II: Daughter of Mamoru Kodai and Queen Starsha. Uses the name "Mio Sanada" when living with Shiro Sanada and subsitutes for Yuki Mori aboard the Yamato during the ship's 2nd fight against the Black Nebula Empire. Seen in SBY: NV, BFY, and SBY III (only in the series's original Japanese version outro).
  • Ryusuke Domon (Jason Jetter): Although assigned to kitchen duty aboard the Yamato, he often takes part in missions outside of that duty. Liitle brother figure to Sususmu Kodai. Seen in SBY III.
  • Takeshi Ageha (Flash Contrail): a Cosmo Tiger pilot aboard the Yamato. Friend of Ryusuke Domon. Seen in SBY III.
  • Hajime "Hito" Hirata (Alan Hardy): Mentor to Ryusuke Domon. Seen in SBY III.
  • Namio Sakamaki: A 1st Cannon Gunner aboard the Yamato. Seen in SBY III and FY.
  • Goro Raiden (Goro "Buster" Block): Yamato's tall Navigator. Seen in SBY III.
  • Heiji Bando (Beaver): a recruit in the Yamato's sciences department. Seen in SBY III.
  • Dairoku Akagi (Ace "Toughy" Diamond): An ex-space trucker who works in the engine room aboard the Yamato. Seen in SBY III.
  • Haruo Nishino (Ben "String" Bean): a 1st Cannon Gunner aboard the Yamato. Friend of Namio Sakamaki. Seen in SBY III.
  • Tsutomu Makunouchi (Whizzer): Husky, bespectacled member of the Yamato's kitchen department. Seen in SBY III.
  • Akiko Todo (Wendy): Grandaughter and secretary of Heikuro Todo. Become's Aihara's girlfriend during the fight war between the Gamilus-Galman Empire and the Bolar Federation. Seen in SBY III.
  • Kuroka (Dubiaius): Earth Federal Government Minister of Solar Energy. Seen in SBY III.
  • Dan Hammer: 1st class tech at space meteorological agency. Commands a Reconnaissance vessel. Seen in SBY III.

Allies of Earthers

  • Queen Starsha: Ruler of planet Iscandar. Helps Yamato save Earth during its first trip to her planet by giving them the Cosmo Cleaner D. Wife of Mamoru Kodai and mother of Sasha Kodai. In some Englsih subs of the Anime multiseries, her name reads "Stasha". Seen in SBY, SBY: NV, BFY (as a ghost), and SBY III (mirage cameo).
  • Sasha (Astra): Sister of Queen Starsha. She delivers Starsha's message about the Cosmo Cleaner D and Wave Motion Tech. before the Yamato's reconstruction. Seen in SBY.
  • Teresa (Treleina): The telepathic inhabitant of Telezart who asks Yamato for help during the time her planet Telezart is attacked by the White Comet Empire. Before the invasion, she was able to master anti-matter and using prayers that can generate powerful energy, only to end up killing all her people when they were in a civil war full of terrorism. In FSBY, Teresa body is made of Anti-matter and due to its efects, she can't touch another person or he/she will be destroyed, but all of that is not the case in SBY 2. It is only in SBY 2 where she is Daisuke Shima's love interest. Also seen in SBY: NV (cameo), and SBY III (only in the series' original Japanese Version outro).
  • Princess Ruda Shalbart (Queen Mariposa): Physical Ruler of Planet Shalbart. Helps the Yamato by giving them a weapon capable of destroying the nuclear fusion in the sun. Love interest of Takeshi Ageha. Seen in SBY III.
  • Mother Shalbart (Queen Guardiana): Spiritual Ruler of Planet Shalbart. Later becomes one with Ruda Shalbart. Seen in SBY III.
  • Queen of Aquarius: Possibly the only inhabitant living on Aquarius. Seen in FY.

Gamilus-Galman Empire

  • Lord Dessler (Leader Desslok): Ruler of the Gamilus Empire, and later of the Galman Empire when the two Empires merged into the Gamilus-Galman Empire. Rival of Susumu Kodai during the Yamato's first two adventures. In some English subs of the Anime multiseries, his name reads "Desler". Seen in SBY, FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, BFY (only in a flashback clip), SBY III, and FY.
  • General Hiss/Hisu (General Krypt): Dessler's right-hand man in SBY.
  • Commander Shultz (Colonel Ganz) and Commander Gantz (Major Bain): Leaders of the Gamilus base on Pluto. Seen in SBY.
  • General Talan (called "Sgt. Masterson" only in the North American dub of SBY III): While introduced as merely a General in SBY, he later replaces Hiss as Dessler's right-hand man prior to the Earth Vs. White Comet Empire War. Seen also in FSBY, SBY 2, SBY: NV, and SBY III.
  • General Domel/Domeru (General Lysis): Leader of Gamilus' campaign to exterminate the human race during the Yamato's 1st voyage to Iscandar. 2nd leader of the Gamilus refuel/supply base on the planet Balan. Commander of Gamilus ships Domeraz II and Domeraz III. Inventor of the Instant Matter Transporter, which can teleport an entire fleet of ships closer to an enemy ship. Seen in SBY.
  • Goer (Volgar): 1st Leader of the Gamilus refuel/supply base on the planet Balan, and later, Domel's assistant. Seen in SBY.
  • Getto (Scarp): Commanding Officer of Gamilus Tri-Deck Carrier 1. Leader of Alpha Campaign. Seen in SBY.
  • Berger/Barger (Rancor): Commanding Officer of Gamilus Tri-Deck Carrier 2. Leader of Diamond Campaign. Seen in SBY.
  • Kreuz/Kroitz (Zadic): Commanding Officer of Gamilus Tri-Deck Carrier 3. Leader of Eliasite Campaign. Seen in SBY.
  • Heidern/Hiderun (Borka): Commanding Officer of the red-colored Gamilus Battle Carrier that takes part in the fight in the Rainbow Star Cluster. Leader of Omega Campaign. Seen in SBY.
  • Vandevil/Bandebel (General Garrat/Garotte): Gamilus Battle Carier Commander responsible for the plan to infect the Yamato crew with starflies. Seen in SBY 2.
  • General Graf shupa/Barreled Action (Arkadeen): Commander of the Tanshibal Battle Area. Seen in SBY 2.
  • General Shi Frage (Garotte): Leader of the Gamilus Attack Torpedo Forces. Seen in SBY 2.
  • General Das Urgens/Yorugensu (Jorgens): Leader of Algonia Star Garrison Forces. Seen in SBY 2.
  • General Maizel Nomdoram/Waltheim (Maizer): Commander of the Galk Battle Area. Seen in SBY 2.
  • Commander Geider/Gaidel (Admiral Diabolius Smeardom): Commander of the Gamilus-Galman Empire's Eastern Area Task Force. Sen in SBY III.
  • Commander Spirus Dagon: Leader of the Gamilus-Galman Empire's 18th Eastern task force, which is similar to Domel's fleet from the fight at the Rainbow Star Cluster. Commands both a mid-size battleship and a twin-disc vessel. Seen in SBY III.
  • Captain Boche: commanding officer in the Gamilus-Galman eastern task foce under Dagon.
  • Commander Histenbarger (Admiral Smellen): Commander of the Gamilus-Galman Empire's Western Area Task Force. Seen in SBY III.
  • General Keeling: The Imperial Army Head of staff of The Gamilus-Galman Empire. Seen in SBY III.
  • Commander Fraken (Lugner Von Feral): Commander of the Gamilus-Galman Empire's wolf-pack sub-space submarine task force. Also known as the "Galman Wolf". Seen in SBY III.
  • Major Helmeyer (Major Nayzmayo): Leader of the Gamilus-Galman Empire's Imperial Survey Group and chief planetary scientist. Commands the Exploration Probe ship. Seen in SBY III.
  • Admiral Gustav: Commander of the Gamilus-Galman Empire's 10th imperial fleet. His name sometimes reads "Gustaf". Seen in SBY III.
  • Tech. Major Frausky (Major Cranshaw): Tech. Commander of the Gamilus-Galman magnetic plant ship team. Seen in SBY III.
  • Commander Geren: Leader of SMITE attack team under Dagon.
  • Commander Usterz: Officer in charge of Gamilus-Galman Reflex gun on Barnard.

White Comet Empire (all seen in FSBY and SBY 2)

  • Zordar the Great (Prince Zordar): Ruler of the White Comet Empire and Commander of its space fortress Gatlantis as well as the Empire's Dreadnaught.
  • Lady Sabera/Sabella (Princess Invidia): Governing Office Comander of the White Comet Empire and consort of Zwordar (Note that it's in the North American English dub of SBY 2 where she's portrayed as Zordar's biological daughter). She's the only citizen of the Empire to be pink-skinned while other members are green-skinned.
  • General Goenitz (General Dire/Dyar): Commander of the White Comet Empire's Attack Fleet.
  • General Razela/Razera (General Gorse): War Committee Council Leader General of the White Comet Empire.
  • Mil/Miru (Morta): Aide of Lady Sabera who assists Lord Dessler during the White Comet Empire's alliance with the Gamilus Empire.
  • Admiral Cosmodart Nazca (General Naska): Commander of the Advance force of the White Comet Empire's Combined Fleet. His ship is a Single-Deck Carrier. Seen only in SBY 2.
  • Admiral Goland (General Torbuck): Leader of the White Comet Empire's Anti-Matter Missile Attack Fleet.
  • General Zabaibal (General Scorch): Scar-faced commander of Storm Trooper Infantry Group of the White Comet Empire's Occupation Battle Corps. He manages an army of tanks during the White Comet Empire's invasion of Telezart.
  • Mazor: A fighter pilot Yamato captures during its trip to Telezart. Seen only in SBY 2.
  • Destar: Sub-Commander in the White Comet Empire's Anti-Matter Missile Attack Fleet.
  • General Gern (Manic): Leader of the White Comet Empire's Carrier Fleet. Seen only in SBY 2.
  • Admiral Valsey/Baruze (General Bleak, sometimes called "General Turpis"): Commander of the White Comet Empire's Combined/Main Fleet and 2nd member of the Empire's War Committee Council. His ships are a Twin-Deck Carrier and the magnaflame gunship Medaluza. (Note that in the English dub of SBY 2, the character's caption tag reads "General Turpris", perhaps due to a writer's error)

Black Nebula Empire

  • Commander Deider/Deda: Commander of the Black Nebula Flagship Pleiades and the 1st Fleet of Black Nebula forces stationed in the Large Megallanic Cloud. Seen in SBY: NV.
  • Melders: Commands the Black Nebula Empire's forces in the Large Megallanic Cloud. Alternate names include "Medlers", "Meldaz", and "Mölders", but are from several different English subs of the Anime multiseries. His ship is the Autostar Goruba (alternately known as "Gorba"). Seen in SBY: NV.
  • Lt. Alphon/Arufon: High-ranking Official of the Black Nebula Empire. During his Empire's invasion of Earth, he falls in love with Yuki Mori, whom he helps disarm the hyperon bomb. Seen in BFY.
  • Scaldart/Skulldart: Supreme Ruler of the Black Nebula Empire. In some English subs of the Anime multiseries, his name reads "Skulldart". Although he's seen in BFY, we only hear his voice in SBY: NV.
  • Sada: Scaldart's primary aide. Unlike other members of the Black Nebula Empire, she's pink-skinned. Seen in BFY.
  • Commander Kazan: Leader of the Black Nebula Empire's Earth Occupation Force, but later spends his time chasing the Yamato on a trip back to Dezarium. Seen in BFY.
  • Commander Grotus: Leader of the Black Nebula Empire's Black Galaxy Defense Group. In some Englsih subs of the Anime multiseries, his name reads "Grotas". Seen in BFY.

Bolar Federation (all seen in SBY III)

  • Bemlayzé: Prime Minister of the Bolar Federation.
  • Gorsakov/Golsakov: General Staff Officer of Bolar Prime, supreme commander of the Bolar Federal space Navy, and Bemlayzé's deputy officer.
  • Balcom: Bolar Main Fleet Commander. In some English subs of the Anime multiseries, his name reads "Balkom".
  • Hawkins (Barphin Balsiky): Leader of the Bolar Federation's 8th Defense Fleet Strike Force.
  • Borroughs/Boroze (Lobo): Regional Governor-General Berth.
  • Captain Buckmaster Ram: Commands the flagship of the Bolar Federation's Berth Fleet, Legendra.
  • Levars/Rebarus (justin Liberatus): Captain of the Berth guard.

Denguil Empire (all seen in FY)

  • Lugal/Lugarl: Supreme Ruler of the Deinguil Empire.
  • Lugal de Zahl: Elder Son of Lugal.
  • Dingil Boy: Younger Son of Lugal. The only survivor of the flood disaster on the planet Denguil. He's also called "Boya".
