Meh, unless the FBI decides that this site is a high security threat, I don't think anyone here has anything to worry about. I find the new feature quite amusing really, I get to 'see' the 'old me'. I was curious if it also pertained to myOtaku but I know it doesn't. Curious only because I think my comments there would be more amusing that they are here LOL.
I took a trip down memory lane and had a good laugh at some of my old comments and the boxes I was able to pull up. The one that got me the most was on a post made in '09 about the announcement of the "next" Doctor (aka Matt Smith) and all the reactions were "ugghhh..." Three years later, it's funny to see how everyone in that box has taken to him, and rather fanatically.
The only glitch I notice is that any comments made pre-Version Vibrant don't show up. Now given that 65 of my 82 pages of comments (yes, I know, not that impressive for someone who's been around this long) are from VV, this isn't really an issue, and I'm aware that getting comments from the grey site/myOtaku is a murky science at best. But still, I'd really appreciate that feature so I can gouge my eyes out at the stuff I was saying in '03.
I like the new feature, it'll make it easier to keep track of conversations I have XD
If people want privacy, that is what the PM system is for. I don't really have a problem with the new system as comments were pretty much viewable by anyone anyway. Although Kelsey has a point with the 'private world' feature... Hmmm.
What I like about the new feature is that I could actually see most, if not all, of the comments that I made at the site in an easier manner. (Why "most"? At the moment, not all of my comments are listed, but that's apparently a bug waiting to be fixed.)
What I'm a little bit concerned is that it also gives other members the ability to view my comment list. I understand that the comments are public in the first place, so they're not exactly private. But again, there's the risk that it would be misused by other people, especially potential stalkers.
It reminds me of that new tool in Facebook found at the right side of the screen, wherein you are automatically updated with every activity of your friends, even if it's just a Like or a comment in something that you're not supposed to be connected with at all. What made many people groan over this is that only the receiver of these updates can change the settings for this, making stalking easier to do.
That's why I understand where other people are coming from. If the new feature limited the members to view only their own comment list, it wouldn't be that big of an issue for many members.
But now that I think about it, many online forums have been doing the same thing as well for years already with regards to one's forum posts. Also, this isn't Facebook wherein your whole identity is revealed to the world. This is theOtaku, where you use a username instead of your real name and you are not intimated to give too much information about yourself.
But hey, it's still the first or second day of 2012 (depending on your timezone). So other changes can still take place.
I don't see this as being much of a problem...it's ok. Don't know how much I love it, but eh. XD
The only thing is DO the privacy settings still apply? I mean, if someone has a world set to "friends only" (or members only)...and someone who isn't a friend (or member of the site) looks at a person's comment on that "friends/members only world", will they be able to see them?
Privacy. So basically, whenever I stumble upon a comment that someone has posted on a wallpaper, or fan art, or check out a possibly interesting world, and look at the comments - I'm invading someone's privacy? Unless you're trafficking pornography, you shouldn't have to worry.
Someone acts strange and stalks you online? There's a lovely blocking feature in place.
Someone reads your old comments? Anyone could've read them before now- just by being an active member on the site and posting comments & reading comments. Having them listed is a small change.
Honestly guys, most websites have this feature. Minitokyo, Zerochan, AnimePaper, YouTube, Yahoo!, etc. All-in-all, TheOtaku is late with this feature. And if you haven't realized that wanting privacy + internet is as fruitful as dividing by zero, I'll be very surprised.
This is a decent update - it'll be easier to keep track of comments, and since the comments in the backroom don't let you check back with older comments (which was pretty lamentable if you are an active talker), this is a helpful update. You'll catch up with past interesting conversations, you'll have some nostalgic moments- so, don't fret about something not that terrible - especially since 80% the internet has already experienced this.
YES! Love the new feature. I can finally keep track of my posts now!
People, I don't know what the hell you're talking about with this invasion of privacy thing. If you comment, it's public anyway, and whoever spends their time comment stalking someone?! (If there are any doing this, they are extremely rare, and that's what the Block option is for anyway).
If anything, it helps you get an idea what the person's like - for example, someone subbing to you and you knowing ZILCH about them (+1 if they have no Worlds or blank ones).
This is overreacting and is in no way an invasion of privacy. If you don't want people seeing what you posted, why don't you just delete all your comments after a few days? That way no one will be able to "stalk" you.
FINALLY! Someone else who isn't bashing on it!! Everyone will get over it later on. It was the same thing with YouTube. New layout-people complain. Now they don't care.
And anyways, I finally found info from random stuff I'm writing that I thought I'd lost in the comments!
I don't see any big problems with the new feature. As far as I'm concerned, I'm just glad to see something new. And, I have nothing to hide, comment wise. I mean... they were technically viewable by everyone before. Now, we can just easily find WHERE we commented. But, yeah, choosing to keep these private might be a good feature to add on.
This new feature makes us really uncomfortable.
I love TheO because it does have some privacy, it's not a facebook. But now we can be comment stalked easily.
IHATEITSOMUCH!!!
I say the next challenge is that we should all create a story by commenting one word each. They did it once on amirite and it turned out hilariously confusing!
