Macross Frontier is an excellent series. I wouldn't let the mecha aspect of it turn you away. The show mostly focuses on the drama between characters and races. I'd highly recommend watching it.
I wanted to watch this anime, but I heard/saw it's mecha D:
Sheryl looks amazing though, always XD So she's the best example ever to encourage people with.
