I'm with you. I don't care what anyone says, L didn't die. Rem killed Watari, but ran out of time to write L's name. L saw that Watari had died and decided to fake his death. In the manga (the original and most reliable source) no on but Yagami-san sees L's supposed body, and I think he could have been easily persuaded to help with the plan. That was how Near leaned things so quickly; L was operating behind the scenes and guiding his successor.
