I'm so glad you are considering this challenge! Yes, pastels are acceptable. Any medium, other than Photoshop, is perfectly fine. (Please note that I have updated the guidelines to the contest. If you have any good reason why you can't use another medium other than PS (e.g. your scanner is broken), then I can make room for an exception in your case.

As for your second topic (cropping), I am not so concerned that you get the backgrounds just so. I know that a lot of impressionistic art is difficult to reproduce, let alone to "anime it." The purpose of this challenge is for people to get the essence of classical works. This challenge is also 3 months long, so you have plenty of time to play around with ideas. I am looking for effort, not perfection. Try to capture the artist's essence in your work while adding a bit of "anime" flair to it. So to answer your question, let's not crop. If you note which classical piece you referenced, then I will have no problem seeing how the two (yours and it) relate.

I really like this idea. Good luck judging this when the time comes. We're barely in the first month of the challenge, and already we are seeing talent like the person who drew the samurai warrior! *gulp* And now I see that Jae is entering!
